1. にたって・にたり is used mainly in formal / written Japanese.
2. にたり is more formal than にたって.
3. Since it is used mainly in written Japanese, when a verb precedes it, it is often a Sino-Japanese する verb (like する and する in the example sentences) because these are suitable for written Japanese.
4. The tense of the verb preceding the compound particle is always non-past, regardless of the tense of the final predicate; so it can be translated as "before" or "prior to".

Under Title, the kanji is missing in Firefox, but it does show up in IE. Am I the only one?

That's actually an unrelated grammar point (which doesn't seem to be in the dictionary here yet... but I see it a lot!) - plain form past tense + って, which means the same thing as ~ても. So ことがあったって = ことがあっても.
