A variation of this is the Vてみたところ, which loosely means 'when ...V (which is in the て form).'

Isn't this grammar overlapping with the other た所 under 所だ.
There it is translated with "Just after A, B", which is pretty much the same like the one here.

I think it means to be actually in the middle of doing something. For example, studying, watching a movie, eating dinner, etc.

てみたところ (when...)

担当者に電話で問い合わせてみたところ、社員旅行の申し込みはもう終わっていた。

Do you think that needs to be listed as an additional construction? It's still the 'ta-form + tokoro', just that the ta form happens to be on a helper verb, and not the main one.

Unicom stays "よく使う形:‾てみたところ" so yes, add it under "Additional usages" would be wise. Other than that, it has more of a "when" feeling, instead of "after".

Ugh, it did that to me the first time and I swore it fixed it the second time. For some reason, if I write in Japanese, it won't show up. My question was what is the difference between point #1 and ようとした (You toshita) ?

The can both mean the same thing, but ようとする can also mean 'to try to a'. V (dict form)ところ strictly refers to a point in time just before the action starts.

there's many examples on this page with 所 instead of ところ, the kanji 所 refers to the physical place but most grammar points using ところ refers to time, so the kanji can make the sentences confusing by changing the meaning.

Can I suggest changing the "About to start A" from point 1 to "About to A" or just "About to..." ?
This because taking as an example this sentence:

僕は今出かけるところです。 I'm just about to go out now.
it's easier to think "About to go out" rather than "About to start to go out"
