I picked up Japanese again after a break of almost 20 years. Lately I am in the habit of daily working through all the schedules on Renshuu, which I'm finding quite enjoyable, especially kanji (which I used to hate back in the day.) I actually got JLPT4 all those years ago and think I could probably pass JLPT3 in December. I don't really need to do it though. (The only benefit would just be personal satisfaction.)
OTOH I currently attend a weekly grammar class and a weekly conversation class, and both those teachers are encouraging me to do it. The thing is I don't want any extra stress. I don't want to have to do extra homework. I don't want to buy extra books or work through practise exams. I'm pretty happy just continuing my current routine on Renshuu in my relaxed way. Will I probably pass the test anyway, without special preparation (beyond using Renshuu every day)? Has anyone successfully done that test without targeted practise? Any advice welcome.
JPLT changed its format in 2009 according to wiki. It had only 4 levels. Now it has 5. I’m studying for n3 and it’s a much larger step up than n4 to n5. I would suggest taking n4 practice test to see where you really are.
For reference I got about ~90%. This information is practically useless to you though 😁 (since you don't know my level and I haven't done any JLPT tests). Haven't studied for them either.
I say just keep doing your thing, no need to stress over it. It's just for fun right? There's always next time.
I guess if it's expensive, that might be a problem.
PS: Maybe I'm weird, but I like the star selection questions :)
Edit: I guess if your questions is "Has anyone successfully done that test without targeted practise?", yeah, I assume people do that. They were probably overqualified for whatever level they took though. It's been a while since you passed N4, I feel like you might be underestimating yourself.
