Something for everyone

Renshuu's resources offer kanji and vocabulary materials for beginners to advanced studiers. The JLPT and the Kanji Kentei are two of the most well known proficiency tests in Japan, and renshuu offers support for many of the most popular textbooks used in high school and university classes.

If you want to make your own lessons, renshuu has a simple lesson builder that helps you quickly look up terms so you don't spend hours typing in definitions and making lists before you begin studying.

An end to A-B studying

Japanese is a complex langauge, with many ways (hiragana, kanji, onyomi, kunyomi, etc) to read and interpret words and kanji. Knowing that, should quizzing really be limited to simple 'flashcards' like this?

to go

おとこ, ダン

male

Renshuu creates quiz questions that let users study individual terms in many different ways so you can create a complex and lasting representation of that information in your head.

Answers to questions are generated on the spot, so you don't trick your mind into thinking you know something simply because you've seen a set of answers before. Some answer sets use other vocabulary/kanji, while others use a misspelling system to create similar terms. Kanji and hiragana are analyzed to create new answers that appear visually similar to help you reinforce materials.
Mastery schedule statistics

Green bars show sufficiently studied materials, while red bars show materials that need to be studied.
Spaced learning geared for Japanese

You might have heard of spaced interval studying, where you study a term less and less as you become more familar with it? It's a great system that allows you to study your weakest terms the most without wasting time on materials you know well.

While most spaced interval systems focus on a single level for an entire term, renshuu.org's system has multiple mastery levels for each term that work to measure different ways of understanding a Japanese term.
Mastery schedules and auto-reviewing

While there are many different ways to study materials on renshuu.org, the most popular is by far the mastery schedule. Mastery schedules are fully automatic, telling you what to study and when.

All users can take advantage of auto-reviewing, where the site automatically reviews you on previously studied materials while you study new lessons. Feel like last year's vocabulary is getting a bit fuzzy, but you don't want to dig out that old textbook? Let renshuu.org handle all the bookwork for you, so you can focus on studying.
A typical study path (vocabulary)

Don't study what you already know!

Most Japanese studiers use several textbooks to prepare for any number of proficiency tests. With the thousands of words you need to master Japanese, there's really no time to waste restudying words you already know just because they appear in a new set of materials.

Terms studied on renshuu.org are stored in a single personal record, regardless of where you study it. Anytime you start a new set of materials, the site already knows what you've studied, and will not waste your time with terms you've mastered.

Of course, the site's user settings does allow for light reviewing so previously studied terms will not be forgotten.
User-adaptive materials

Here's three common terms studied by users:
/にほん, /べんきょう, /あさごはん

Based on renshuu's adaptive system, this is how different users might see these terms:

Student LevelTerms
Beginner にほんべんきょうあさごはん
Intermediate べんきょうごはん
Advanced

Renshuu.org automatically adjusts all materials to fit your learning level!
No beginner or advanced materials, just "you" materials

Renshuu.org keeps track of your kanji and vocabulary knowledge and uses that to create materials that are made expressly for you. Anytime you study new kanji or mark kanji as known in your study history, the site automatically rewrites words to fit your kanji knowledge at that exact moment.

This isn't limited to words, either. Every sentence in the site's 150,000 sentence library is rewritten for you so you don't have one or two unstudied kanji making an otherwise good sentence unreadable.

Of course, the site allows you to customize in seconds when kanji is and isn't shown, suggests known kanji for users that don't study kanji on renshuu, and even let's you enter in your previous study history before you started using the site.
