For writing questions, I think there should also be an option to show romaji or play the pronunciation instead of showing the character. This'll help us achieve a higher level of mastery for each character.
Can you send me a screenshot of the question in which you'd like to see this happen?
These types of questions:
I just feel like it's more helpful writing the character purely based on what romaji is being shown/played, especially if you're really used to the stroke order rules.
While spoken prompts are not available, there is a lot of customization in how the question appears. Before starting the quiz, tap the settings icon next to the Study/Learn button. Then, tap the "Currently studying" at the top, and you'll be able to adjust settings, including a hidden mode in which a hint is given, and you have to draw it without any tracing available. There's also a couple of intermediary forms that span the question style above and the hidden mode.
Spoken prompts for kana are available in QuickDraw, aren’t they?
They are, but only because quick draw is a more controlled form of writing practice, and the kana spoken prompts are only in the kana levels, and it's guaranteed that audio is available for every kana character. I am much more hesitant towards making it available in writing within quizzes, but a)not for any kanji characters, and b)not for any words that lack the audio - so you'd get different "prompts" for each writing question depending on what data was available.
Oh yes, I do know of the other settings for writing questions. I still would really prefer it if the character wasn't shown to us at all though... I hope both shown and spoken romaji get implemented for those questions eventually!
I use this other site for learning Mandarin called Dong Chinese, and I really like the way the site goes about generating a wide variety of questions for you and the way it teaches and tests writing proficiency. Coming from finishing the Mandarin course on Duolingo, it's an amazing site for achieving a much deeper understanding of Mandarin. If the writing questions were tweaked to be more like how it is on Dong Chinese, I would rank this site right up there with it.
In any case, thank you for the support! And thank you for making this site! I don't think there's any other one like this one for learning Japanese.
Just to be clear, for this request, are you talking more about kanji characters, or about the kana alphabets?
If possible, having it done for both kanji and kana would be amazingly helpful, with the question asking whether it wants the kana or kanji characters. It could maybe even ask for both types if the user wants to set it that way.
I think there may be confusion on my part, let me re ask my question. Are you referring to kanji questions (as in, single kanji characters in a kanji schedule), or words in a vocab schedule that may or may not have kanji available?
Allow me to be blunt and make the point that Michael is politely avoiding: this feature would not be useful for kanji. For example, these are all the kanji read シュウ that are known to renshuu:

Ah okay, I understand now. Thank you haha. Sorry about that, I still only have a very basic understanding of how Japanese works.
Having the feature just for kana characters would be perfectly fine :)
Although, a way to address all the kanji variations would be to give a sentence in romaji and have the user write out the right kana and kanji based on the context. But I understand it would take a lot more extra work having to provide sentences as well, so having the feature for all the kana characters would be more than enough and would go a really long way :)
There will not be any "romaji" for questions (with the sole exception of the kana alphabets), but we do have listening + write down what you hear questions as part of renshuu pro :)
