I do not know off the top of my head if this particular expression is limited to によって, or if it appears without it as well.

Some places separate the two usages, but they refer to the same idea:

よう = how / the way that

よう + によって = depending on how / the way that

The former is most often used with verbs of emotion (e.g. る, む) or verbs of change (e.g. わる, せる), while the latter is more varied.


Here are 2 examples without によって from Renshuu's sentence library:

クリスはわりように、ベスがぶだろうとがありました。 = Chris was confident that Beth would be delighted with his improvement.

びようはとてもきかった。 = Great was the delight of his parents.
