I'm not sure if this is a bug or if it is supposed to be this way, but the last few days, it seems like I get XP for quizzing a little bit at the very beginning, but then after a certain point (I think after leveling up once) I don't receive any more XP for quizzes, though I can get XP for other activities on Renshuu. (I can upload before/after screenshots if necessary).
I don't think it used to be that way. Was this a deliberate change to how XP and the level system work?
There's been no changes to the system in ...a couple of years, actually! It does drop dramatically after the first level, though, and this has always been the case.
Is it actually zero XP for quizzing after leveling up, though?
For example, these screenshots are both from yesterday:
You can see from the terms studied on the left that I did a lot of quizzing in between these two screenshots, but there's only a 3% difference in XP, which I thought (but could be wrong) was something like 2% for playing Shiritori and 1% for a forum post or something like that (and the first 20% past level 27 was from those two daily challenges that I completed). When I finish a quiz, the XP bar does show up at the bottom of my screen, but it doesn't move at all, which is consistent with what my homepage is showing.
EDIT: Today, now that I'm paying closer attention, even prior to leveling up (still on level 27 a.k.a. 327) the XP bar doesn't move very much after a quiz. Could it simply be that because my level is in the hundreds, the amount of XP required to reach the next level is such a large amount that one quiz doesn't make much of a visible difference in terms of percent?
By chance, did you see a significant increase in studying in the last few days?
The reason why this is happening is because renshuu periodically (every few days) checks your study level (how much you've studied) for the last 7-10 days, and then uses that floating average as a basis for your levelling up.
So if a user doesn't use renshuu much, averaging 20 terms a day, they'll get roughly 1 level for keeping up that level.
Likewise, if someone else does 300 terms a day, they will be rewarded (through the level) for staying near that.
It's less about "study as much as you can", and more "let's find a good level that works best for oneself".
Looking at your numbers, your daily average spiked starting yesterday. That doesn't mean that you started studying a lot yesterday, but that the average for the last week or so was calculated yesterday, and set at a ...pretty high number.
Thank you for taking the time to explain this! I would never have guessed on my own that is how the XP system works.
And yes, I suddenly started studying a bunch of terms two days ago after some weeks of inactivity. What prompted this was I was asking on the Discord server about how Japanese level roles get set and realized that when I linked my Renshuu account to Discord it bumped down my level (compared to the level I had previously manually set) and that the reason for this is the total number of vocab I have studied in Renshuu is not really reflective of my real-life proficiency.
I know I can manually set it back, but that felt like cheating and I had a few thousand words in my N2-N1 vocab schedules I had not yet studied on Renshuu, most of which happen to be words I already know, so I turned on the setting to add new vocab even if I have not finished my reviews yet and started going through all of those words (when they come up as "new vocabulary" in quizzes) and marking as known the ones I already knew. That's how/why I did several hundred reviews each of the last couple of days, which is not normal behavior for me (also, I'm on summer break, which is the only reason why I have both the time and inclination to comb through all those words). And that explains why the amount of XP recently seemed so off to me compared to what I used to see in the past.
There probably is a more efficient way to do that. (笑)
But it's been really good for me by exposing me to some actual new words for once and getting me out of the rut of never seeing any new words or terms on Renshuu because I always have way too many reviews.
Anyways,
I have a few more questions that are not related to my original question about XP but do have to do with some specifics of how J-level roles for the discord server are calculated (beyond what's explained on https://www.renshuu.org/discord) and with N2/N1 vocabulary schedules. Would it be better to ask those here, or make a new thread about those so other users can tell from the thread title where to find what information?
Finally, thank you, again, for your explanations. I really appreciate your availability and willingness to explain these kinds of things to us.
Let's say....separate thread, that way it is easier for others to find.
