I honestly don't know how to start looking for Japanese punk or metal music. Does anyone have any recommendations?

打首獄門同好会 uchikubigokumon-doukoukai a.k.a gokumon, Nice band with songs about every day life, with humour. Bonus: most videos have lyrics on screen.

e.g.Gokumon video about muscles

Band Maid. Girls in maid outfits playing guitar. The lead guitarist is very talented.

e.g. Band Maid - Dice

妖精帝國 Yousei Teikoku, a band which makes song about a mythical Fairy kingdom

e.g. Yousei Teikoku - Astral Dogma

岸田教団＆THE明星ロケッツ Kishida Kyoudan & The Akeboshi Rockets. Does a lot of songs for anime, and Touhou.

e.g.High School Of The Dead Opening

I haven't listened to the whole Playlist and I don't know how many of them have lyrics that are actually in Japanese, but I got this

I don't listen to them myself and can't speak for how much of the lyrics are Japanese, but both of these are very famous/classic bands.

Hello!

Typically, the way to go is find a band, then find a recommended band, etc. I suggest browsing via bandcamp.

What type of metal were you looking for? When speaking about metal in general, arguably the kings of Japanese heavy metal, you can't miss Seikima-II (聖飢魔II) . They are iconic and even have their own mythology/lore. If you like black metal, try Sabbat. They are amazing and an inspiration.


GISM (Guerrilla Incendiary Sabotage Murder) are one of the best Japanese punk metal bands. Gauze play hardcore punk too.

Honourable mention: Corrupted. Not for the faint of heart.

Hi again, you guys!

I completely forgot about Effigy. They were an amazing band that played crust/thrash metal back in the eighties. It's quite underground, but you might enjoy it!
