: what is the difference between みます and みます?

They are both intransitive verb and have the same meaning: "to be(come) crowded"

My understanding (which could be wrong) is:

If they are used for "to be crowded" 込む and 混む they are the same, but む is more common.

However, む is used a ton as a secondary verb meaning something loosely like "to include" or "into"

e.g. 思い込む "to be under the impression"

I believe they are the same word, although with different patterns of usage, as explained above by @Anonymous123.

If you examine the kanji, you can see that is more about the discombobulating confusion of a crowd, and is more about entering into an enclosed space, so you might want to choose which character you use with that in mind.

That said, I’m a little confused about how is a kokuji. Why was there a need to invent a new character?

what is kokuji?

And for this sentence, "がこんでいました". Is it better to use む than む?

Kokuji is the name for a character invented in Japan . Most characters come from Chinese, and have both Japanese and Chinese readings (kun’yomi and on’yomi). Kokuji only have kun’yomi.

As far as the sentence goes, I don’t really know. Probably either one is fine.
