I've bought and placed a few various pet beds that aren't linked to a specific kind of animal, thinking it might allow Kao to sleep in it. However, Kao isn't using any of them so now I'm wondering whether I'm doing something wrong or that it's simply not possible?

Kaochan is not a pet, and doesn't use pet beds.

While some pet beds only allow animals of a certain type, any animal of that type can sleep in it (so if you have multiple animals of that type, you may see a different animal on that bed each night) . There isn't a link from one particular pet to one particular bed.
