This is just personal speculation, but I think the level progression slows down the closer you get to evolving. The number of correct answers also seems to influence the amount of EXP you get. I get a lot of massive EXP bursts right after my Kao evolves and then it slows down
That's a good guess, but not correct. It's almost impossible to get past 2 levels a day - it's largely based on your average study amounts across the last 7-10, and how close you are to maintaining that. There's also bonuses on some days - try tapping the Kao-chan to get more info :)
Okay good so everyone is superstitious about Kao-chan and it's not just me. lol.

My extra exp days are Sunday and Monday. I hadn't noticed a big difference with that. I was definitely getting an evolution every two days, even on days with out the +50%. This drop would take me down to one evolution every 5 days. So I'm talking a significant drops here.
I'm study the same or similar amount of items daily. The only thing I can think out that has changed is that I started answering the grammar questions quicker. I used to read them all but I got a little tired so started picking the answer using the english. So if the system is actually logging time spent to complete the test for exp giving that could effect it. I really can't think of anything else that has changed enough to make this big of an effect.
I guess I can try going back to long sessions just as an experiment. But maybe this is just me getting more superstitious as I go...
The time spent quizzing doesn't factor into it, just the number of terms quizzed
It’s not impossible to get more than two levels per day. I’ve gotten five routinely, by studying the usual amount and completing the challenges.
EDIT: I was wrong. See below.

How many schedules do you have going at once? Or what is the study load?
As Michael has said elsewhere, it’s not how much you study that counts, it’s how consistent you are from day to day. You need to meet or exceed your average to get full credit.
As for me, I have two kanji schedules (one for writing) and four vocabulary schedules. The vocabulary is capped so I never review more than 360 terms in a day. I tend to focus on kanji.
EDIT: I should clarify that although I said five levels is “routine,” I don’t gain that many every day. In fact, it seems that on average I only gain about 1.25 levels per day.
Michael said the actual number of minutes spent studying wasn't a factor, but did say that the number of terms you study in a day is a factor so if you are getting five levels in a day, I'd say you are studying a lot of terms.
I'm only reaching a 100 reviews terms for my one vocab at the moment so that's probably a factor.
Thank you! your perspective was illumuinating.

If you're getting (have gotten) 5 a day, something is broken :(
Update: I'm looking at the raw data, and you've never gotten more then 2.8 levels worth of points (so possibly 3 level ups, depending on where you were the previous day). There's some math involved, but basically, it's impossible to get more than 200 points for quizzing each day (100 points = 1 level), and the points from everything else (challenges, activities, etc.) almost never goes above 100.
Good to know. I guess it just felt like five a day. I wasn’t really keeping track.
Sorry for the distraction.

Thank you so much for humoring me enough to look into the raw data like that. So basically. above 100 points is fairly normal and above 200 is doing very good for the day.
