I had only recently started using this app in learning Japanese (on and off for roughly a few weeks), so I'm still practicing my kana. But these days in trying to do a daily exercise of the kana schedules I've encountered quite a frustrating problem. It won't let me review myself on EVERY term simultaneously. And this is in the daily review stage by the way; basically, it keeps displaying n terms to review (such as 80 for katakana) and not all 104 and I had found no setting to change this fact. As it's very time consuming to review those it's letting me to and then review all of them, I'd rather not have to live with this..
Any idea on what I can do or what's going on? I'm not totally knowledgeable on the ways of Renshuu, so I'm hoping I can receive some help here.
You and renshuu are working at cross purposes. Renshuu is trying to focus on your weaknesses and you are trying to cover both weaknesses and strengths. There’s nothing wrong with your approach, but if you continue with your Japanese studies, you will soon reach a point where a full review of everything is impractical.
I recommend supplementing renshuu with a daily routine where you write out the 五十音.
Hm okay. I see where you're coming from. But right now, I don't have a firm enough grasp on the characters I particularly struggle with if any. Like there's a few I fumble from time to time such as chi and wo (hiragana), and ho and ma (hiragana).. but I'm a quick learner and I can usually swiftly get a grip of it again especially when it concerns such rudimentary mistakes.
I'm not necessarily focusing on both my weaknesses and strengths, I think you were a little hasty in your judgment there. I'm just putting attention towards exposing myself to the characters until it becomes more natural. That's the ideal thing I want to do right now.
So I take it it's not possible for me to directly customise the terms I can do a daily study on? That's a little disappoint, I wish I could have at least a little more control over that aspect.
Thanks for giving me such a quick and easy response.
Oh, by the way. Is there a schedule where I can practice writing out syllables like what you're suggesting?
That seems like a good idea, to further enhance my Japanese learning like that.
Edit - hey, sorry on behalf of my rough writing style. I'm autistic and I intrinsically find difficulty in structuring my words. But I'm glad to be here in such a comfortable learning environment regardless.
No worries. Personally, I find that paper and pencil work much better than computers for practicing writing, but renshuu does have writing vectors in most schedules. You could modify your existing hiragana schedule to include writing exercises. A better approach might be to clone your hiragana schedule and make one dedicated to writing.
Also, be sure to try QuickDraw. Actually, do that first. It might be all you need.
Hm.. I really like the ideas you're proposing. But, I don't even know how I can modify my hiragana schedule like that yet.
Furthermore, solely practicing on quick draw is certainly a valid option.. I noticed it has dual functionality as a means to practice identifying characters coupled with training yourself to write said characters.. but a reliable way to quiz yourself in a controlled manner also has its merit. I think both are necessary assets, if I'm being honest. But.. I might also want to be smarter in how I think about those assets.
I've made this recommendation a few times, but I use the Gboard drawing-to-kana keyboard for all my studies and it definitely helped me with memorizing the kana faster. Drawing each kana can be a bit tedious at times, but I can draw most kana quite well as a result. I think Renshuu also has a built-in drawing screen and the option to turn on "Write answer if possible" (or something along those lines...) I also read a lot of mnemonics for the kana that gave me trouble. ヲ is nuisance because I never see it, so I literally remember it as "Must be Wo because I never see it." I can't recommend doing this, though
Also, it's nice to see someone else on Renshuu who has autism! Apologies if my writing is a bit too wordy and confusing, I also struggle to translate my thoughts into words.

I agree with ポールおじちゃん on making a second lesson set for Hiragana and Katakana where you can practice writing while still having a multiple choice quiz. I decided to tweak my quizzes to have as many questions for review as possible, but keep in mind Renshuu's algorithm will try to narrow your quiz down to the kana you've missed in previous quizzes. When I was still learning, I would just do a full review every day after completing Renshuu's select kana quiz.
Note that your mastery level can stay the same for kana if you keep reviewing them repeatedly. The app prefers to check your retention by leaving the kana you can recognize out of the quizzes for a while, then reintroducing them to see if you remember. This is a bit annoying early on when you want to review everything, but you may want to keep the mastery level system in mind later on because kana can get "stuck" at a specific level if you review them too often.
