I'm currently working my way through the Japanese basics schedules which consist of vocab, grammar, and there's the n5 kanji deck that's separate. I noticed renshuu supports sentences too, but those haven't appeared in my schedules yet. Looking into it, it seems there's sentence schedules starting with the proper "beginner/n5" set? Is this the recommended time to start with sentences? Do I just let it add it once I finish up the basics set? I'm a big believer in sentence flashcards so I'd like to ensure that it's added at the proper time. Thanks :)
There are some sets that will be recommended to you as you progress further, but when it comes to sentences you can add them by going to Resources then Lesson Center and clicking on made by renshuu and choosing the kind of lesson that you want to add(kanji, vocab, grammar or sentences).
If you want to start now then I encourage you to do so, just keep in mind there may be some vocab or grammar that you may not be familiar with.
Yeah, I've had the vocab/grammar stuff popping up as I complete things. I suppose the answer then is yes, it will pop up sentences once I'm far enough along. I just didn't want to keep progressing waiting on a sentence schedule that would never arrive. I guess I'll have patience then. :)
Sorry, I wasn't really clear on that point, but as far as I'm aware you do have to add sentences manually, I don't remember being ever recommended to add sentences by the website.
The schedule order seems to suggest the included ones start at the beginner level (rather than basic). I suppose if I get there and it isn't added yet, I'll add it manually myself 🤷♀️
Nothing on Renshuu is automatically fed to you, so don't sit around waiting for something you're interested in studying. There are pre-made lesson sets for beginners who aren't using any outside materials and need guidance on what to study, but Renshuu doesn't force you to learn according to a single path -- YOU choose your materials and add things yourself, at your own pace, depending on what's helpful for your own study style.
You can add the premade N5 sentence schedule whenever you want just to test out; if it's too difficult for you right now you can just freeze or remove it and try again later, or you can make your own schedule using lessons that work better for you. Don't worry about following some mandated study order or whether some system determines you're "ready" for something you want to study, just follow what interests and motivates you and decide for yourself whether it's helpful to you at your current stage of learning.
When I had I joined it already added the basic decks and has been updating as Ive worked through them. You're saying after I get through it all I'll have to manually add the other n5 decks?
When you make your account, Renshuu offers you to start the pre-made study path. After that, everything is your decision -- even progressing to the next set of materials within Japanese Basics requires you to press a button asking to be served the lesson. Renshuu doesn't presume that you're ready for something and railroad you into studying it after you reach a certain level or invest a certain amount of time, it's all your choice and customizable to how you want to study and what motivates you.
When you complete the Japanese Basics schedules, you will get a message in your inbox congratulating you and suggesting you move on to Beginner Japanese/N5, and I believe there's a special link to add those schedules quickly, but you still have to choose to add them and take that action yourself.
I was not getting any prompt to add any sentence schedules, even after I was prompted to start Beginner (N5) lessons, so I manually added "The Basic 300" and "Beginner Sentences (N5)" from the Lesson Center. I think a lot of the Basic 300 sentences are fine for doing along with Japanese Basics (though I did create a schedule called "Sentence Vocabulary" for myself to add words that came up often that I didn't know from my vocabulary lessons) and the Beginner Sentences (N5) overlaps with it, so when you're ready for Beginner Sentences (N5), you'll be able to skip a big chunk as already learned.
This has helped me, and the sentences have been extremely valuable to me in my own learning.
I hope this helps.
Alright. Thanks so much. I think I'll manually add the basic 300 starting tomorrow, and will do beginner/n5 sentences once I get there for vocab/grammar.
I wasn't entirely sure how the initial railroading worked on renshuu and you all have explained it quite well. I knew about manually adding stuff, but I figured there was a preset path if you didn't want to fuss with that. It was easy enough to see the suggested schedules and that sort of thing.
Thanks :)
