I recently came to know about this Japanese card game called 坊 主 めくり. I kind of understand the rules of the game but I don’t understand the origin of its name. Could someone help?
坊 主 means 'Buddhist priest'. めくる means 'to turn over'. So, literally, 坊 主 めくり = turning over a priest.
In the rules of the game, the only time you lose the cards in your hand is when you turn over a (face down) priest card from the deck.
