I have just been quizzed on the word to say 言 う and the answer was ゆう. Is there a huge difference between the two?
As I know, いう is just the normal pronunciation. ゆう is used for casual speaking because it's easier to pronounce, but it's not used in writing.
Both are pronounced [jɯ̟ᵝː] in Tokyo dialect according to Wiktionary . As far as I can tell, いう is used because it makes the inflections (いって, いった, いわない, etc) appear to be regular.
