I'm going to Japan in the very near future and I'm wondering if y'all have any food suggestions that are either pretty much exclusive to japan or almost always better in Japan

I know that a lot of Renshuu's users have either been to Japan or live in it and we'll be spending most of our time in Tokyo and Kyoto, and possibly Osaka, so if you suggestions for specific restaurants or shops, that would be great too

thanks

Monjayaki is visually...unsettling yet quite delicious. It doesn't have any exotic ingredients in it, it's just that the preparation (it's one of those cook is in front of you) makes it look not so much like food, but it's quite tasty.

I live in Kobe, right next door to Osaka.

tacoyaki is a good suggestion I think, that's octopus in doughy balls. In Osaka, at the dotobori, you have these sweet coins that are very popular, like pancakes, it's street food. In Kyoto once I had grilled sparrow on a stick, was odd but fine.

one of my favourites, it's not amazingly different, is onigiri. Rice balls with stuff in the inside, I think it's worth trying.

If you're in Tokyo, I think you should definitely try to find Tokyo Bananas. They're little sponge cakes filled with banana cream, but even my non-banana-liking family members enjoy it.

Also melon pan and anpan are always a must when I go to Japan.

absolutely recommend Tsujihan and specifically the Ark Hills Branch if you're looking to try out seafood bowls. best place for it IMO and that branch specifically because it's got the least lines compared to the other branches.

dont forget to ask for the broth when you're 2/3rds through the bowl too!

I forgot to mention - well, it's kind of a weird one, but vegetable juice. I don't know, but it seemed to be everywhere in Japan, in hotels, vending machines and convenience stores, and it wasn't like spinach and celery juice - it was always bright orange in colour, and tasted really good, something that i could actually enjoy

Maybe it's just where I'm from (England) that doesn't have it though. I think the brand was usually kagome or something like that

I'm so sorry to keep on commenting - I keep on forgetting to put stuff in

  1. Castella - a kind of sweet, but not to sweet, and really delicious cake.
  2. Omurice - fried rice with an omelette on top.
  3. Warabi mochi - a transparent-ish sorry of mochi that you eat with kinako (or other stuff, that's just what I ate it with when I was in Japan).
  4. Fruit sandwich - maybe you were going to eat this one anyway, but fruit sandos are so so good
  5. Anything with anko (sweet red bean paste). This might not be for everyone, as quite a few of my family members don't like it, but I like anko so much that it's become my username on renshuu.

I'm so sorry if I've put in too many recommendations

obviously you don't have to eat everything that I've recommended, and I'm so sorry if I made you feel pressured to do so
