I'm looking for a list of (preferably the most used) hiragana words that are generally not written in kanji.

I've been learning wanikani for 2 years now and have come a long way. But now I have a gap in words that are simply written in hiragana because those are not in wanikani.

I'm hoping there is a list like this somewhere or maybe someone has a good idea on how to create such a list myself.

A lot of food and animal vocabulary are written in Hiragana/katakana since their kanji is too rare or difficult to write especially by hand as I know. For example "giraffe" is rarely written like but more often like きりん/キリン. Or also for "apple" the kanji is but usually only written as りんご/リンゴ. Also all the onomatopoeia or onomatopeic words are written in hira/kata like ペコペコ or きちんと they don't have kanji. If you want I can make a list for you of common words that have kanji but are only written with Hira/kata.

Or if you want to do it yourself, you can make a list here on Renshuu and somehow find maybe a dictionary or something that shows words which are usually written in kana. I found this: https://www.japandict.com/lists/misc/uk?page=1 but I don't know how good this dictionary is.

The Advanced Search tool is designed to do things like this. I haven’t used myself though, so I can’t offer much advice.

Mm, a few of those on the first page, I don't think are that commonly written in kana, being the one that sticks out the most, but also , and .

It does seem like a good starting point, though~

Yeah I was thinking that too! That's why I don't know if it's a good tool but as you said, it can probably be a good starting point. Maybe I can find better dictionaries with the same function.

I just tested out how to use that for this purpose.

Add words > Textbook/Group > Common words. Add filter > About the term > No kanji.

I actually threw together a list from that. I named it "Common no kanji words" ('cause no creativity) and it should be public.

Wow this is already amazing. Thank you so much. I'm really thankful for this :)

I'm not very well versed in all the capabilities of Renshuu yet but I've noticed that in the search function it gives example sentences for each word and it shows how many example sentences each word has.

Could I assume that the amount of sentences there are for a word is a relatively 'ok' proxy for how popular that word is?

And if so, would it be possible to sort the list you made by amount of example sentences each word has, as to be able to make a somewhat decent, lets say, 500 most popular hiragana words this way?

Yeah, the amount of sentences could be a good baseline. Unfortunately I can't seem to sort by amount of sentences, only filter out those without sentences, which takes it from 5k to 2k... I did make that reduced list, though (called "Reduced common no kanji words"), even if it is still kinda overwhelming in size...~

Alright great.

If I assume the first page is an adequate sample of the whole list with regards to nr of sentences of each word, 25% of the words are >300 sentences.

I might actually go in and manually delete all words with less than 300 example sentences which should leave me with something around 500 words in that case.

Would people be interested in that list when I'm done?

Thank you for your help so far.

Forgive my ignorance but is there a way for me to copy your list to my own account so that I can start removing low sentence words? Right now it won't let me edit or save it, but I might be missing something.

If you want to make a modified list based on another user's list you can:

1) Make a Schedule based on that user's list:

click on user's name-> under List's made, find the list you want -> click on it -> click on More (on the right) -> Add to Schedule (make a temporary schedule)

2) Make copy in Advanced Search

Advanced Search -> Add Words -> Schedule -> pick the temporary schedule you made

Actions -> List -> New List

3) (Optional) Go back and delete Schedule

On Dashboard -> Manage your Schedules -> click on check box by the temporary schedule -> Remove Schedule

There might be an easier way, but that'll get it done.
