Now that I'm approaching one year of studying Japanese, I realized I haven't made a lot of progress. I want to finish studying the N5 terms and grammar by the end of this year, but I don't know how to develop a good pace without "overdoing" it. My learning has been very sporadic thus far, and most of my terms are not related to the N5 test at all. (I was studying Japanese around a busy schedule for the past year, but I now have a decent amount of free time to study later in the day.) Any good suggestions for developing a regular daily learning schedule would be much appreciated.

There was a thread on this a while back, it might be hard to find, but people had various opinions. Basically you look at the number of terms that you need to learn by a target date, and then plan your study such that you learn x number of new terms each day. You need to leave time at the end for review: you don’t want to still be encountering new terms on the day of the exam.
