Forums - How do I make furigana for known kanji disappear?

Previously when I did vocab quizzes, furigana for any known kanji that I had studied before was hidden and furigana would only show for kanji I hadn’t studied and as I learned more kanji more furigana would disappear from my vocab quizzes. For some reason lately it shows me furigana for everything now, and I have no clue what I did to make this happen. I’ve been driving myself crazy looking at every single setting trying to change this, to no avail. Sorry if it’s something obvious that I’ve been missing but I really liked the way it was before so if anyone knows how to fix it please let me know! Thank you!

I'm not sure if it's something that recently started for me, or if it's always been that way, but I have the same frustration. It seems the vocab questions have never shown kanji I know without furigana, but I could be misremembering. Anyway, I have been trying to force myself for months to not keep reading words with kanji I know by the furigana, but it's so easy to slip into. I would also like to know if there's a way to turn furigana off, only for kanji I know. I don't want to turn off furigana completely, but I don't know if it's an all or nothing kind of thing.

I am certain I used to have that feature enabled in some way. I especially remember that it took me awhile to learn the kanji for some reason so for learning all of the days of the week it was the only one with furigana and had two furigana-less characters on either side and I was excited when the whole thing showed with no furigana. Maybe it was just a weird bug with my account or something but hopefully not.

Edit: My grammar schedules seem to work the same way they always have, with known readings having the furigana hidden, but no matter how much I mess with the settings I can’t figure out how to revert the vocab.

With renshuu being as complex as it is, it will help a ton to get some screenshots of exactly what you're looking at, and what you'd expect/like to see

So for example here in one of my grammar schedules, I already know the reading じょ for so it doesn’t show me that reading.

You can see it here too with

My vocabulary quizzes no longer do that and you can see that even though the reading for was hidden in the previous screenshot, it is visible here.

Another example is that when I learned this one only the reading for would be shown during quizzes but now all of the kanji have furigana.

It seems to have happened globally to all of my vocabulary schedules and I know I didn’t go and mess with the individual settings so here’s my settings for vocabulary overall:

Thank you for your help!

It looks like these questions are testing the Kana→Meaning vector, so they HAVE to show you the furigana in order to test you on that vector. In your schedule settings, if you have "Always show kanji for Hiragana → Meaning questions" enabled, kana vector questions will use kanji with furigana instead of showing you the kana alone. It doesn't have anything to do with which kanji you know.

If you don't want to be quizzed on kana like this and only want to be given kanji-related questions for terms you know the kanji for, click "(Change these)" beside the "Currently studying" section at the top of the settings pop-up, and enable the combined Japanese vectors instead of the Kana vector.

Gillianfaith- that was it!! Thank you so so much!

マイコー This I think was also the source of the “bug” I reported earlier where I all the sudden had a bunch more reviews. Not sure how I managed to change the settings for all my vocab schedules at once but very glad I figured it out. Thank you so much for everything!

Edit: unfortunately I’ve run into some other issues, see reply below for details/screenshots

Sorry to keep asking questions! Now I’m having the problem that when my settings look like this:

Furigana works like expected and like I previously remember it (EDIT: actually I just tried it again and now I’m getting similar errors to below, although it seems to have fewer of them) however then this happens:

Because kana only words and unknown Kanji are excluded.

When my settings look like this:

or this:

All of my terms are available again but then the original problem with the furigana returns.

Interestingly, while on the whole it gives me readings for kanji I know already it isn’t 100% consistent for example here:

I know all three kanji for this word but it only hides the reading for for some reason.

No clue what I’ve done to get things so mixed up and I feel like I’ve gotten myself all tangled up trying to figure it out but please let me know if you know how to fix it!

Thank you so much for continuing to help me!

Is furigana not appearing for known kanji only for vocabulary quizzes? I didn't have anything come up in vocab today due to the words and vectors due to be quizzed. But I did screenshot an example from quizzing on sentences. This was from hours ago though, so if something was changed in renshuu after that, I haven't had the chance to see it yet.

You can see by the shading of the text that I have already studied the kanji and 、but I still see furigana for them. As much as I try not to, I keep reading kanji I know by the furigana and not getting in practice reading the kanji alone.

If the furigana shouldn't be there, I can check on it again tomorrow.

I decided to check on the vocab quiz before I call it a night. It appears that what I'm experiencing is that furigana for known kanji only disappear for vocab words being quizzed. So the unknown kanji in the word will have furigana, and all the kanji in the rest of the sentence will have furigana (as well as elsewhere on renshuu, as seen in the screenshot from the sentence quiz I just sent).

Is there a way to turn off furigana for known kanji in the rest of the sentence as well? I would like to get into the practice of reading without the furigana, but still want furigana for unknown kanji.

Do you have the "always show furigana in sentences" option turned on?

Ok, took me a bit to find where that was, but yeah, it was checked. I unchecked it. Thank you for the tip!

マイコー: The furigana is working as expected again! Thank you! The only thing that’s a little strange is that even though I switched settings back to Meaning Japanese and Japanese Meaning, I didn’t get any kana only reviews at all today. I suppose it’s possible I just didn’t have any to review though, but the absence felt strange especially because I know there have been a few katakana words I messed up on recently so expected to be seeing today. Thank you again!

My experience with those settings (having just Japanese Meaning checked instead of Kanji Meaning and Kana Meaning) causes the quiz to default to quiz for kanji vectors only when kanji is available. In this way, vocab that doesn't have kanji available won't show as "can't study" and vocab with kanji available will never quiz for kana.

I actually wanted to quiz for kana to get mastery for the kana vectors, even though I knew the kanji. So I unchecked "Japanese Meaning" and had both Kanji Meaning and Kana Meaning checked instead. It flooded my lvl 1 & 2 vocab with hundreds of words though, because it activated the kana vectors, which were at 0% for most of those words. I've gotten caught up on that finally. But anyway, I was not having the problem you were with the Kana Meaning being checked because I did not have "always show kanji" checked.

I'm not sure if I wasn't getting tested for kana only words when I had Japanese Meaning checked though. I just know I wasn't tested for kana vectors if there were kanji. Not sure if this info helps.
