I just thought I'd post this for discussion purposes. Usually while looking at a compound kanji word, I can break down each kanji's meaning and have it make sense as to why the particular kanji's were chosen for that word.
BUT: Does anyone have an explanation for the first kanji of RyuuGakuSei? 留 学生 I understand the last two kanji's are basically like 'school', and 'student', but the meanings for the first kanji are all things like: detain, fasten, halt, stop. None of which implies studying over seas (as far as I can tell?)
Thanks in advanced for any input you have on this :3 I'm sure I'll have more threads with similar kanji definition questions!!!
edit: How would you use this in a sentence? I don't see any examples:
りゅう [留]リウ (造) ①とめる。とまる。とどまる。 「―学・―任・―年」「慰―・拘―・残―・逗―とうりゅう・保―」 ②気化させたものを冷やして液体にする。 「蒸―」 Meikyo Dictionary Rikaichan shows that this とめる can be written as 止める with no change to meaning. "to park, to leave somewhere for a time." are at the end of the list for とめる. Likewise とどまる "to reside, to stay in one place": think of it as a stop-over.
yes, 留 does mean 'to stop,' but it sometimes has connotations of 'to stay,' (like 留守番, which can be an answering machine, or the person who stays behind in the office so someone's there etc ;)) - one way of thinking about it is someone who stops travelling to study ;D
