I'm quite late here, but this is such a cool forum and I really wanted to make a post.
Since the beginning of last year, I've actually been developing a story and characters for a future manga I really want to create someday, and this is the perfect place to share a little bit about my main character! I can't say too much though (I'd spoil the whole thing), so I'll stick to her backstory for now 
First of all, I need to include a little history on the environment. The story is set in cyberpunk Japan several decades in the future (2091, to be exact) where certain animal-human hybrids exist in the population (mostly cat and dog hybrids, with some more exotic species as well).
My main character's name is Yuuki, but the world knows her by her nickname, Datenshi. She and her brother Takeshi grew up in a relatively normal household, which is surprising considering the fact that their father was an assassin-for-hire and their mother was a secret agent. Time went by without any major incidents until one night, when the parents engaged in a joint mission to take down a dangerous hybrid. The police discovered the fight and all three were arrested (even though Yuuki's parents weren't in the wrong). However, a struggle ensued and the hybrid managed to grab a gun and kill almost everyone involved, including her parents.
After that, the children were left to survive on their own (because they were kept secret by their parents, no one knew they existed and therefore, no one came to their aid). Being the older brother, Takeshi was the one who had to find ways to support the both of them (he was 12 and Yuuki was 9 at the time), often by performing small jobs for underground market dealers (I forgot to mention that both of them were trained briefly in martial arts and gun-wielding by their parents, and they continued to train on their own after their parents died). After many years, when Yuuki was a young teenager, she made the rash decision to join a gang known as the Kurokami (Black Wolf) without telling her brother . Although they were rumored to be a group that took justice into their own hands and did what the police force were too lazy to do, they did far more than that and turned out to be extremely radical and unruly. Eventually, Yuuki decided to leave the Kurokami, even though she would be labeled as a deserter and hunted by them for the rest of her life.
Yuuki was extremely burdened by the consequences of her past, and it often got to her head. One night, she made an attempt on her own life, but her brother found out just in time. However, as he wrestled the knife away from her, he accidently cut a gash across her eye socket that required her to get a cybernetic eye replacement.
After that, Yuuki began to evolve into a "vigilante" of sorts. She took jobs of all kinds from various dealers and specialized in eradicating dangerous public figures. The people almost saw her as a hero, but the police labeled her as a threat because of her unpredictability. Around the start of the actual story, she had begun to feel that her life had become a monotonous cycle and that her original sense of justice was decaying, but all of that would change when she met a certain someone at a certain club....
Sorry, I know this is really long, but I've always wanted to share this story with others and this is the perfect opportunity. There's a lot more to the story and her personality that would take a lot of explaining, but it always makes me happy to share the things I'm passionate about

when I make a throwaway D&D character but there was nothing else to do so I gave it a truckload of lore

All the stories in this thread are amazing, and they've definitely given me some inspiration for my own 
Tan Hu is based on a bluebird. Due to specific circumstances, he loves food.
That sounds fun, but I'll pass. I don't like making a lot of OCs right after another (because they don't get used for anything with me). I love the idea, though!
