I’m new to Japanese and am really desperate to learn it as I have a trip next year and would like to converse with locals!

Start off with Hiragana and Katakana, then do Words and Grammar beginning with N5 through N1. Later make a custom schedule for Kanji where you add every new Kanji that come up in Words

If your priority is conversation, you want to practice talking to people. There is no better way to do that than an in-person class. If that’s not possible, there are instructors who have lessons on zoom, twitch, and discord.

Learning hiragana will help a lot, but with just a year to go, I'd say to maybe focus more on speaking than reading. There's some grammatical things that are more used in speech rather than text and vice versa. That being said...being able to read the most common signs would likely be important, and I find it easier to learn Japanese when I'm reading kana than romaji, it forces me to think more directly in Japanese.
For conversation, you may want to look into a tutor on Italki or similar tutor site. Once you know basics, Hellotalk is a good option to find a Japanese speaker who is learning your native language for exchange!

First, take notes, like on actual paper Whether it's the alphabet, vocal, kanji, or grammar, taking notes helps your brain remember and process whatever you are writing down. this works best if you take notes in your own words rather than just copying something.

Second, use mnemonics. mnemonics help you remember words or kanji or anything really, by using association with any of the five senses. the more senses that you can associate, the easier it will to be to remember whatever it is that you're trying to remember, because then your brain only has to remember one or two of those sensations to be able to retain the word or phrase.

Third, and I can't stress this enough, expose yourself to the language, whether that's reading and/or writing, or talking to an actual human being, either fluent or a learner like yourself. The sooner you do this, the better. there is no time where you are "ready", and the sooner that you just put yourself in a situation where your brain I forced to use even the small (or large) amount of Japanese that it knows, the faster you will progress.

Fourth, don't use renshuu alone. You need to talk to actual people to become fluent.

Lastly, find a good motivation to keep you learning. And "wanting to speak a second language" isn't good enough. you have to be passionate about the language you're learning. otherwise you will lose interest and just stop, unless you have a will of steel.

I hope this fricking multi paragraph essay helps you along your learning journey. Im no language expert, this is just what I have found helps me progress the fastest. good luck

dont go down the rabbit hole of constantly searching "is x a good resource?" "whats the fastest and easiest way to learn x?" because ur gonna end up spending more time just trying to find the "right" resource and no time actually learning!! also dont be a perfectionist. its better to have a basic grasp of many different things than be stuck on one grammar aspect forever
