Anyone have any songs on hand that are good for listening practice? Preferably slower ones if possible.
Hey Pixel!
Good music to practice your Japanese with is whatever music that sounds good to you! Even if it's faster paced, music apps usually have lyrics display so you can pause and read through. If you scroll along through the lyrics while listening, and look up the words you don't know, it's a great way to practice. (If you don't know the reading of the kanji, sometimes typing it in the dictionary search how you think you heard it and playing around with it a little works - worse case, the kanji search has a "search by parts" feature and that helps me countless times esp for videogames where there isn't a copy and paste handy) There are lots of genres to choose from so I'm sure you'll find something you like! - I actually learned how relative clauses work ahead of being taught it because I saw it used in song lyrics :)

I appreciate the information, but I was talking about songs specifically for listening practice.
Do you mean songs designed specifically for listening practice or songs that work well for it due to simplicity of grammar etc? If its the latter, do you have a preference of genre etc. ?

Either one works, but I’d prefer ones that have very clearly spoken lyrics. Also, I don’t have any preferred genre.
Got it, sorry for the confusion. Sadly, rock/metal/rap will be on average harder to understand, so my recommendations will stray from the manly genres and into the girly/children side. Artists like Mikeneko are good since there is the absolute minimal BG instruments and clear lyrics, along with varying speed and difficulty of words. Ah, there is also a song specifically titled "Song for Learning Japanese". I can't get through it without cringing a bit, but it seems solid for learning. I wish I could be more help on this one, but hopefully that is at least a start for you and works well ^_^

Thanks for the help. So long as it helps in the long run, then it’s worth at least a listen.
Haha no prob mate. Good luck!
Edit: nvm Mikeneko appears to have explicit content so i apologize - i don't listen to them aside from like 1 song so i wasn't aware !! Skip that one!
To be honest, I'm not really into Japanese music, so I don't know much about Japanese songs. But I came across this song 素敵なことがあなたを待っている By Maiko Fujita while waching a Japanese show, and I think it's suitable for listening practice as it's slow and has clear lyrics. Not sure if her other songs are good for listening practice too as I haven't checked them yet
idk about specifically for learning but listening wise I like stuff like
this by loulet, its basically a conversation, very clear
upikos songs they are slowish and clear
or something like anonymous m because its in interview style, but probably a cover since mikus voice can be difficult to understand if youre not used to it. clear but has fast parts I guess? (honestly everything here is much slower than the average hs girl speaking on the phone to her friends)
slow and conversationally songs were the first ones I started being able to understand since thats closer to what I learned
romancy songs are also good, stuff like darling
I think if you have an artist you like it also helps a little since you get used to their style which makes understanding them easier
Hi! Maybe you will like the songs of Riria, which have clear lyrics, also songs from the singer of Lemon. But songs from anime does really work great in my opinion! Because you like it you are more likely to remember it and also learn all the vocabulary! Hopes this helps? If you need more recommendations, just say so.
Some pickles are sweet
Their really a treat
And sour as king
Part one their bazing
I've been trying to learn Japanese partly through immersion and listening to Jpop, and I'm always looking for great slow songs with vocab I can understand. OTOH the trouble with recommendations is people's tastes are so different. But, since you asked us, I'll tell you the greatest slow song I've found so far is 防人の詩 (Sakimori no Uta) by folk singer Sada Masashi, especially the version from the album Sada Masashi Best, 1994.
I've recently started getting into Enka music and I've noticed a lot of the lyrics in some the songs have quite basic sentence structure, which could be helpful if you're somewhat new like me. In particular I'd recommend Ikuzo Yoshi - the songs by him I've listened to have clear vocals and are really beautiful while not being grammatically complicated (specific songs I'd recommend are 雪国 and 海峡)
