So I've seen ぎる used to emphasize the passing nature of time with an emotional aspect, and つ to just make a statement. But my dictionary says る exists too, however I've never seen it used. Is it more of a dated expression?

There are several example sentences in renshuu’s dictionary for 経る. Do those help?

I highly recommend goo's for these kinds of questions. Googling 使け or い with the words you're interested in will also bring up results.

Yeah there are many disadvantages to using a japanese to english dictionary, I'd google like you said if I had a larger vocabulary. But it does seem like I was right, るis commonly used in the て form when describing a change of state over a passing period of time, and the page you linked to says る is for a transition of time.
