Forums - How to handle multiple vocab schedules?

I currently have two vocabulary schedules:

  1. An N3 deck that I’ve completed but still review and add new words to as I encounter them.
  2. An N2 deck, which I’m about 30% through.

I know decks can be merged—I’ve done this for Kanji and grammar—but I prefer to study new words and N2 vocab separately. However, managing two separate 1,500-word decks feels inefficient.

Ideally, I’d like to keep everything in one deck while still being able to study my own added vocab and N2 vocab separately. Is there a way to do this?

There's nothing really inefficient about it, other than visually having two schedules. Schedules are just "containers", but each term is handled, managed, and scheduled on its own.

Putting them together, though, would prevent you from being able to treat anything inside the schedule as coming from different sources, so there is not really a way to combine them in the way you're thinking.

Oh I see, that's good to know that the terms are handled on their own apart from the schedules. I'll just keep the two word schedules separate for now then

It's the reason why you can, for example, delete schedules and bring them back later on - there is no actual mastery data stored inside of them.

Wait, but I'm not seeing that behavior actually. I just added a new n3 schedule to my list as a test, and it's showing most of the vocab as being unstudied, even tho I finished my original n3 deck already.

Thanks for the feedback. I can promise that it is most likely a visual issue or misunderstanding - the schedules are literally uncapable of holding and removing mastery data unless you use the specific "reset schedule" option in settings.

When you say "n3 deck", what exactly are you using? if it's from the community lists and made by a user, there is a chance for different ideas of what goes into n3.

If it's just renshuu's recommended materials, then if you can give a few examples of "this word appears unlearned, but I know I studied it before", I can look into it more :)

I added the N3 vocabulary schedule from Renshuu's recommended list—both this time and, I believe, about six months ago when I first started studying. The two vocabulary decks are different enough that, out of roughly 1,700 words, only about 400 overlap.

Did the N3 vocabulary deck change significantly since then? For example, my old N3 deck included oiwai (おい), but the new deck only has iwai (い) without おい.

It has not changed at all - I am currently working on a planned revision for the fall, but it does not exist anywhere in the sense that a user can grab it and begin studying with it.

There were a small (as in, a dozen or so) terms that were mismarked in the dictionary, but their place in the lists has not changed at all. I typically never change the lists until I make a major revision (which is what's planned for the fall.)

Hmm that's strange then, why is my n3 vocab deck so different from the current one?

I'm honestly not quite sure. Do you still have both the old and new on your dashboard?

No I removed it already

I see - unfortunately, there is not a way to dig into it. The only thing I can think of is that maybe your original list was one of the user-made ones called N3 in Community Lists, but that doesn't seem to be the case based on what you've said.

Anyway, the set you have now is the "correct" set of materials, but will be seeing a revision (mostly in the form of an increase in terms) around fall, alongside the completed set of grammar lessons for n3.

Why not split it . Do some of it daily

Thanks for checking. Yeah I'm pretty sure it's not from the community lists, it was just part of the n3 decks that were assigned to me when I first joined renshuu.

You're welcome, and I do appreciate your understanding - I'm more than happy to look into anything that comes up in the future, just let me know right when you see it :)
