Today I was having fun participating in Shiritori. I wanted to put the word "konogoro" but I misremembered the writing and tried something like "konokoro", but then while trying to make it fit, I accidentally entered the word "konoko" - of course that would exist. And look what's the meaning:

Why does there even have to be a word for "dried sea cucumber ovaries"?

Can you feel my embarrassment?

Anyway, mostly sharing it for the lulz.

The word is 海鼠子, also known as 口子, and it exists because people eat it. It’s supposed to be a delicacy and a specialty of the Noto Peninsula, which makes me wonder if @マイコー has ever tried it.

I too have discovered that game of Shiritori is surprisingly educational. While there's cases where one obliviously plays something that ends up sounding perverted in the displayed definition, I have a suspicion that there are also certain players who know what they're doing in that regard. It's not a pastime for sheltered young maidens, that's for sure.

Your post also made me wonder whether anyone here has eaten or any other part of a sea cucumber.

Oh, it's food! Of course that makes a lot of sense! It sounds like a very rare delicacy. I have no idea how it would taste and I'm not the biggest fan of frutti di mare, which I image may be similar. But as long as it's safe, I'd give it a try!

That's okay! Every time I try to write 息子 "son"

むすこ it shows up as "penis" so ...kao_shiawase.pngkao_shiawase.png

Imagine my awkwardness and panic 1st time I encountered it. I was desperately searching for a nonexistent delete buttonkao_shiawase.pngkao_shiawase.pngkao_shiawase.pngkao_shiawase.png

It really is kind of annoying how many synonyms that word has. Those definitions should get filtered out if you have vulgar words unchecked, though.

Interesting. I'm probably in the camp that prefers to know what everything means (for better or worse) but I'm also interested to know more about this setting which filters vulgar words out. Where do I find it?

In the options under dictionary.

Thanks, that was interesting to discover. In my case, "derogatory" and "vulgar" were already checked. Does that mean if I play say "shakuhachi" I will see only the innocent meaning, but other players might see the vulgar meaning?

That setting is on safe by default, which makes sense. So parents don't have to worry that the site is teaching their kids the cuss words first. But for an adult it actually makes sense to disable that filter, because you probably want to learn what you're saying, especially the ambiguous things.

There's always room for saying something embarrassing anyway, even with perfectly unassuming words.

Why did the word "warehouse" come up when I took a quiz on Renshuu to learn Japanese words, along with this image underneath

😵🫣😱

This is an old thread about words in Shirtori, so if you want to discuss something outside of that topic you should start a new thread.

But the word "warehouse" is a normal word (A building where goods and wares are stored). Perhaps you are confusing it with as similarly spelled word associated with a house of ill repute.
