How do you tell if a fox mask is an "evil" or a "good" one?
Are the kitsune really 13 types? Internet resources are awful sometimes! I can't seem to tell the line between modern and culture. Reccomend me a source or preferably a book, please?

Sorry for late replies...I was just doing research about these things cuz imm sooo into foxxesss ( r u? )
For me Kitsune Masks are like Anbu Black ops's Mask
Kitsune masks can generally symbolize different types of fox spirits not necessarily good or evil
That list of “13 types of kitsune” thats all over the internet isa modern compilation
The 13-types list isnt from traditional Shinto or Buddhist texts....
--> Books from web ( cuz I really didn't thought books really existed for these things ;( )
- The Catalpa Bow - A serious academic dive into fox possession and folklore in rural Japan.
- Kitsune: Japan’s Fox of Mystery, Romance and Humor
- Japanese Mythology: Hermeneutics on Scripture
- The Book of Yokai: Mysterious Creatures of Japanese Folklore
- Pandemonium and Parade: Japanese Monsters and the Culture of Yokai
A good kitsune (called Zenko or “benevolent fox”) usually has a calm, serene face, often smiling softly with wide/ gentle eyes
An evil or mischievous kitsune (often called Yako or Nogitsune) will have a fiercer or sly expression, narrowed or slanted eyes, sharp grins or snarls
HOPE IT HELPS!
❝usually has a calm, serene face, often smiling softly with wide/ gentle eyes OR will have a fiercer or sly expression, narrowed or slanted eyes, sharp grins or snarls❞ Figured color or how the drawing is made, if it smiles or not.. etc. would have some meaning. THIS DID HELP ME ALOT! I really couldn't find it
Foxes are a huge part of Japan's culture! Not only seen in Naruto.
There's lots of different festivals! Like Kitsune-bi Matsuri (I even suspect Naruto's wedding might be based on that.. even though it is not mentioned. But he DOES have whiskers on his face like Kitsune) and more
I did get the Zenko and Nogitsune!
But I wasn't sure about the masks ! Since, they can be traditional, but they could be used in art or theater and are also a modern thing!
レプライのことはありがとうございました!♡
はい、きつねが好きです。
No problem, yuki! Btw that pic with kitsune masks are So OP! And now I really want to study more about kitsunes! I didn't really thought up until now that foxes were a large part and a contribution (sorta) in Japan's heritage and culture

They are messengers of Inari god of rice.
Some believe that when there is rain while sunny, foxes are having a wedding! There's lots of stories and folklore about fox changing shape to decieve humans, or cursing rocks and other interesting things! How many tails a fox has represents how many years it has lived.
And much much more
Since Japanese culture is very different and lots of fun! I thought that by getting a book (especially about youkai) I can learn and share w/my boyfriend. Read us bedtime stories Sounds like a plan! ♡
