I thought 戻る was used for returning to one of multiple previous states or locations, while 返る for the original, excluding the case of sentient things returning to their homes.

So why is the former notused here?

彼女は病院に連れていかれた時に正気にかえった。

Is it because 返る has a stronger nuance of a single, correct, original state which is clarity or sanity here

They overlap in meaning quite a bit, and I can find both 正気に戻る and 正気に返る being used.
