It seems to me that disable option for reset mastery of associated vocab when learning kanji doesn't affect anything. My steps:
It happend several times for different days and do not depend on the option what to learn first.
I have disabled study vector Kanna - Kanji on this schedule, all others (free) are turned on (including Kanji - Kanna).
The "Japanese > Meaning" and "Meaning > Japanese" vectors would also exhibit this behavior.
Excuse me, I don't understand this technical details. So, I do need to study kanji for some time or do I need to enable that vector? Because it just add words for vocab schedule and I waste some time to answer terms that I already know. If it confirmed as a bug then I am sorry for being impatient.
Sorry for the delay. Yes, once you learn kanji for the first time, you will need to study words that have that kanji in them a bit before the reviews for those terms start to slow down.
I have the same problem. Some of the words I had at level 9 dropped to level 1 once I started doing a new kanji schedule. Is there a way to keep learning new kanji without losing the related vocab mastery?
There is no actual loss in mastery level.
I've written about this for, but I'm not sure where, so I'll give a quick recap.
On most word schedules, these vectors are turned on
Kanji > Kana
Japanese > Meaning
Meaning > Japanese
"Japanese" basically means "kana if they don't know kanji, kanji if they do". So internally, it is actually two vectors: Japanese > Meaning would be Kana > Meaning and Kanji > Meaning, but only one of them is turned on at time.
So take a word: 食べる/たべる. Assume you do not yet know the kanji, so you will have two vectors active:
Japanese > Meaning (but actually, Kana >Meaning)
Meaning > Japanese (Meaning > Kana).
Kanji > Kana is not "on", as you do not have any kanji. This makes sense, because if it was included in your average from the beginning you'd never get a term to level 9 (100%) because even if your kana>meaning and meaning>kana are maxed out, kanji>kana would be at zero.
So, you reach this state:
Kana > Meaning: level 9 (100%)
Meaning > Kana: level 9 (100%)
(Vectors not active/included in average: Kanji > Meaning, Kanji > Kana, Kanji > Meaning)
Now, suddenly you learn the 食 kanji. Based on the default settings, it will now deactivate kana > meaning and meaning > kana, as you will no longer be quizzed on them. Instead, it looks like this;
Kanji > Kana: level 1
Kanji > Meaning: level 1
Meaning > Kanji: level 1
(Not active: Kana > Meaning and Meaning > Kana)
Therefore, your active average is 0. Those two level 9s did not get deleted, they are just not shown since you are no longer studying them.
"Based on the default settings" - where can I change these settings?
Specifically, that is referring to the study vectors. If you tap "Settings" for a schedule, you'll see "currently studying" on the top, and you can adjust the vectors in there.
