Yeah, they now appear correctly. :) Only noticed now that
1) the Japanese tilde (naninani) also renders as a question mark. In the 1st post of: renshuu.org > Questions about renshuu.org > How to enter a なになに + expression term
2) Also, the hanzi in the 3rd post of this thread (by Aoshiroi) are rendered as ?: 日本語を勉強しましょう / Let's study Japanese! > [English/日本語] Anything About Japanese > Help understanding a sentence.
3) Kanji and Hiragana are not displayed at all in this post. Only whitespace is displayed instead. In Ladymercury's 3rd post, which begins with "Could this be an option?" after the text "ie: past/polite of "
the following text is supposed to be displayed: 着る
着ました 着られました 着ていました 着たました
This is in the thread: renshuu.org > Feature Brainstorming/Critiquing > Finished/Rejected Requests > Beta 'hardening' round 1: grammar quizzing (ends Christmas)
4) The Japanese characters 昔日本 or 一人で歩く ? come out as @{@or l ?
in 3rd post (by Jhyn) in the thread renshuu.org > Feature Brainstorming/Critiquing > let's talk etc?
5) renshuu.org > Feature Brainstorming/Critiquing > Everyone go here and give me the results (15 secs) In the 4th post:
I have no idea what it is -.- but ルビッキーアンディー sounds right comes out in the new forums as: I have no idea what it is -.- but rbL[AfB[ sounds right
Update: From my last post, only items #1 and #2 remain the same. #3, 4, 5 have been fixed. -> http://www.renshuu.org/index.php?page=community/forum_topic&topic_id=1284
2) In the post by FoeNyx, Tōkyō is T?ky? "Luckily our coworkers at T?ky? are safe (internet kept working)" from the thread 会話 / General discussion > [English] Japan, にほん, 日本 > M8.9 Earthquake 2011-03-11
This link with a tilde (on the last post) of the thread is cut before the Japanized tilde, which is a regular tilde in the old forum:

These are going to be very tricky to fix, but I will work on it.
Basically (if you're interested) - the site is coded in shift-jis, one of the japanese character encodings. The old forums, however, are coded in utf-8. There are many characters that are present in the latter but not the former.
I would love to switch the entire site over to utf-8, but it's a rather crazy process, and it is very hard to do piece-by-piece.
Anyways, it is something I need to tackle eventually, so I will see if I cannot figure out a way to have at least the forum pages remain in utf-8 so these problems disappear.
Ok, on a roll today, and I *think* I have a fix in place, albeit..a little strange.
1. The tilde on the link appears correctly 2. The french page looks generally correct (there is one ? mark, but that's it) 3. Err...I think everything else is good.
Ok, so that's why all these strange characters keep coming up. So that means there would be no other fix but to still use utf-8?
Or would this be only a problem for the old posts, since all new posts inputted once the new forums are used would use shift-jis?
In which case, a table (of substitute characters) could be used for the conversion of old posts data(??) from utf-8 to shift-jis? :-\
I don't know if this a result of the fix, but your username is coming up really strange in the Unread posts page: :'( :D Upon further checking, everything that is supposed to be in Japanese on this page is strange.
I would prefer to switch over entirely to utf-8, because it has a much wider japanese character support.
Anyways, I'm plowing through the new functions (add topic, add post, edit post, delete post, etc) - so I probably won't get to the unread page business til tomorrow.

I don't remember why I chose shift-jis originally. It was a LONG time ago.
Tomorrow, I will be uploaded the new batch of files. They have: 1. New Reply 2. New Topic 3. Edit Post (+Topic Title) 4. Delete Post / Title
It's pretty simple, but I'm pretty proud of a couple of small niceties. There is *baaasic* bbcode support - haven't gotten everything added in yet (font changes, colors, smilies), and I haven't figured out how to get the cursor to reset inside of the bbcode you just selected, but it does work on the whole.
