I am still not the best with kana (especially with the katakana since I focused on hiragana first) so I was wondering if you could add a setting that if you hovered over a word or kanji reading it would display the romaji sound (kind of like how in grammar if you hover over a word you can have it display the dictionary entry)

mostly so I can use that to sound it out in my head for extra reinforcement (and it would help with my ability with the kana themselves),

In my opinion romaji should be avoided at all cost. If you still have trouble with kana, you should focus on drills and reading practice. Easily accessible romaji would do way more harm than good in the long run. Your brain needs to stop "translating" kana into romaji and start recognising them as sounds directly, as early as possible. You should focus on tackling the issue, not trying to add training wheels.

I've had a similar problem with furigana — if they're there, I end up reading them instead of the actual kanji. The same thing happens with hover dictionaries: instead of taking a few seconds to recall a word's reading, it's tempting to take the easy way out and just look it up. Over time, this habit can seriously hurt your progress.

"Your brain needs to stop "translating" kana into romaji and start recognizing them as sounds directly" the idea is not for the actually romaji but for the sound behind the romaji (romaji is just the medium since you cant see sounds). if you don't know the sound for a kana it is impossible to work on recognizing them as sounds. (I don't always have access to audio plus lots of words don't even have audio this is kind of a work around).

"You should focus on tackling the issue" I actually disagree here since this is something that you don't need 100% before learning words, kanji, and grammar. I feel its a lot more effective to get to a point were you just need these training wheel and slowly work on it on the side plus I do think its more valuable to practice connecting the kana to the sound in context of words and sentences (especially for particles like は and を or things like です since it gives a outline of when the alternative sound is used so instead of working on は having the sound "ha" and sometimes "wa" you can think of it like it having the sound "ha" however when its the particle it is instead the sound "wa") this is the main reason why I am good at hiragana and not katakana since hiragana is used a lot more which by practicing words and grammar helped naturally connect them (I am of the opinion that if you can work on it naturally/on the side without negative consequences then that's how you should do it since there is lots of things you need to learn)

While there is the temptation that's why I do think it should be a setting not on all the time nor should it be like furigana (if you can't handle the temptation or don't need it just disable it) for me that's not really a problem but that's probably just because of my personality (I don't like furigana either for the same reason however for me the hover dictionaries are fine)

Thanks for the original request, and the reply from another user.

While some words indeed do not have sound, there is more than enough (closing in on 20,000) words with audio to cover any given characters (or combination of characters) ample coverage of the pronunciation.

That aside, I do not plan on adding romaji lookups in any form on renshuu. For the most part, renshuu is extremely un-opinionated in the sense that it lets you more or less choose exactly how you want to study and interact with the contents.

With regards to romaji, though, I decided many years ago to deliberately exclude it on renshuu (outside of the hiragana and katakana learning materials). I've discussed this elsewhere on renshuu, and I cannot fully repeat what I've written before, but I feel *extremely* strongly both as a learner and as a teacher (mainly of Enlglish as a second language, but also of Japanese) for 15+ years that romaji should be strongly discouraged outside of learning the original alphabets.

As the OP noted, you do not "need" to know all the kana in order to move onto words, grammar, kanji, etc. However, all evidence I've seen in my life points to it not being "need", but "unless you want to take more time to achieve less, you should learn them ahead of time."

Japanese is hard, and there is no way getting around it. It takes a significant amount of time to get even basic understanding, but renshuu is focused on long-term learning, and not "learn a few words or phrases for a trip" (although this can still be done). In the long run, fully learning the kana alphabets is a drop in the bucket of time that it takes to learn even a fraction of everything else.

(Again, I am not able to list all of the other reasons - trying to catch up after being away on a trip.)

While I naturally wish for others to agree with me on this, I do hope that you can see *why* I did it - I feel that the way renshuu makes the materials available is the fastest and most efficient way of learning Japanese, and while adding romaji *may* help in niche cases for certain users (especially in the realm of what generates motivation for learners), it would create a net negative impact for learners on renshuu as a whole.

Thats more than fair. It definitely depends on the person if they end up abusing it and I do see how that's a major concern. While I do still think it would be best to have it as an option (with disclaimers and such) it's your decision at the end of the day, can't exactly force you to do it how I want, and as long as you have considered it that's all I can ask for. (Hope you enjoyed your trip seems you needed it)
