Recently, it seems like every time I search for an image to add to a dictionary entry, the results are complete garbage. Only by searching related concepts over and over am I ever able to find anything at all relevant. I realize that there is aggressive filtering in place to keep out inappropriate pictures, but it doesn’t seem to be working right.
I guess I should provide an example. Try 鎌足. See how long it takes to find the image I eventually settled on, if you can.
It's Google's API, and it's not just safe search, but it is also only showing results that are not limited by copyright - the latter is the main thing keeping the results from being great, but unlike LLMs, I'm not of the "if it's online, it is for anyone to use" mindset.
This voices a long-time growing frustration of mine with Google. And Cory Doctorow, as always, comes to say "yep, it's as you thought and worse" and does it in a loveable way.
