To start taking notes I would suggest you first use the green symbol the add icon to add terms in your list.

Then I would recommend that you start creating your own notes by clicking on the three dots and then clicking on add usage note ( there will come an option : visible to me or visible to public . But if the word has too many mnemonics or notes the default will be "for me " only.)
