Who will be crowned tournament champion ?
Who will rise and who will fall ?
Will the new up and comers continue to rise or will the veterans put them back in their place ?
Will Ura pull off an 足取り ?
You beat me to it! Waiting for the Highlights video to be uploaded to NHK World, since the live only showed the second half. Will wee see a confirmation of the status quo, or will the big challengers of the last basho charge forward and shake things up?
Just this morning, I randomly learned that 肩透かし also means "disappointment, letdown". Well, it sure is for the one hitting the 土俵!
Also, I'm all excited to see an 足取り from Ura, but I'm concerned he might pull a ligament or something before he pulls that. (Note to self: look up the equivalent of "knock on wood" in Japanese.) When he got that (thankfully minor) injury the last basho, I thought this might be it for our Man in Pink.
桑原桑原 or 鶴亀鶴亀. I think the second one must be the kid’s version.
Obviously Onosato is the favourite, especially after running through Aonishiki today, but who else has a good shot at the Emperor's cup? I feel like if daiesho is 100% he could possibly get a second Yusho.
I suppose Hoshoryu won't go down without a fight. But there are some strong contenders. Since the three-way playoff in January, I keep expecting to see surprises from Oho, for example. Not much yet, though.
Random, non-serious thoughts:
- Tobizaru's first-day performance looked like he was learning a country dance. Clap your hands, spin around your partner, do a twirl, and a-spin, and a-twirl...
- Miyagino-oyakata often looks like he's sleeping there on the side of the ring. I'm sure it's not the case.
- does anyone else like to look for interesting faces in the hall between fights? Cool finds in previous bashos: a man with white hair and a snazzy bright red hat; a lady in beautiful Japanese attire with a super-high, teased-up hairdo (think '60s US); a stunning 芸者; an elderly gentleman who simply beamed all the time, like "I can't believe I get to be here!"
- Raja Pradhan somehow managed to say "that's all she wrote" only twice on day 1, I wonder if there's something wrong with him. :))
