I am happy to announce that I was able to procure a copy of the kanji data from https://kanji.jitenon.jp/ that I can integrate into renshuu! In addition to Japanese definitions and other markers (such as kokuji), there are a huge number of kanji reading updates taking place.

99% of these updates are of the following types:
1. Addition or removal of rare readings on school-level kanji
2. Addition or removal of readings on non-school kanji (for kanji not taught in school, there is no "rare" or "common" readings)

The majority of that last 1% is for school level kanji where a rare kanji is taught at the high school level, and the markings have been updated.

For most users, this will not affect them. However, if you have the setting turned on for studying rare readings, or you study non-school kanji (kanji kentei level 1 or beyond), you will most likely see changes in the readings. This includes some rare kanji that have, for example, kunyomi readings where previously there were none.

This is one of those changes that once done, I will most likely never need to update the readings again for the lifetime of renshuu, but it can cause some friction in the meantime. I do apologize for that.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Current status: all readings have been updated.

Although there is an extremely high number of kanji which will ultimately have changes (over 10,000), I will provide a changelog once it is complete. I am rolling out a couple of levels each day so I can handle issues as they come up.

Whatever you did erased all the kunyomi readings, and they cannot be marked as known. All my kunyomi are at 0 and are grayed out. If I try to mark them as known, they just gray out again, and act as unknown. Working on pre-1 now.

Having over 2000 kanji studied in renshuu for me, this did affect some of my schedules. However there's one term in my radicals schedule that is stuck at the "need review". I can't get to study it. Not that it's anything major, but it's annoying not being able to 100% clear my schedules for the day.

@じゅうり - did you change your settings between when posting that message and now? I checked, but they all came up as white for me.

As to the rad schedule, I'd be happy to look into that.

Radical schedule should be fixed, and I'm running the same process on all other recent accounts to make sure it doesn't affect them either. Basically, there was a divide between your personal kanji data for a specific kanji and the official data, so the process went through and cleaned out those "no longer exists" kanji readings.

Gotcha, thanks a lot. It's fixed on my end

Pretty much every kanji I'm seeing now has the Kyouiku and Jouyou tags. It feels excessive, and far less useful than Kokuji or other tags. Considering these Kanji are already in common lists or have pronunciations with or , would it make sense to hide them or have that as an option?

I got the notification about this saying I had some Kanji I was studying affected, but I'm not sure what Kanji it is. Is there a way I can see what Kanji reading or rare Kanji it was that made me get the notification for this?

I'll think about the tags, thanks!

And no, there is not (yet) a way to see which kanji were affected.

Wow, so many changes! Suddenly, I have five times my normal number of kanji to review. Not to mention, several mnemonics now seem to be out of date. I’m going to be busy today and probably for the next couple of days. It’s a good thing Michael decided to do it in stages.

It's not pretty or anything, but here is the final changelog. Note: not all of these changes have taken place, but this is the final list.

I may (later on), format this to better show off the additions/subtractions (like a diff), but for now, here it is.

Note: link maaay not work in the app - might take viewing it from a web browser.

Yeah, I got an error message from the app.

Do I understand correctly that if a character has changes to both kun’yomi and on’yomi, those will be reported on separate lines?

Okay, with the color coding I can clearly see that kun’yomi and on’yomi are reported on the same line.

Edit: cleaned it up. green = addition, red = removal.

Sometimes, it looks like the same reading got added and removed. That means that that rarity on the reading changed.

Green is added, red is removed, and black is unchanged? Or black is only the rarity changed?

Unchanged for black, since if the rarity changed, the reading get remove and added from what マイコー said.

Also, I don't know if it's because the changelog was done quickly but I noticed that only got xゆげ added but キ is not in black.

Hopefully, it's just the changelog but just in case. (Edit: seems like there a few like that where the new kunyomi is present but the old unchanged onyomi is not)

Otherwise, thank you!!! That update is huge!! Removing a lot of the repetive reading in basic kanji will probably help a lot of beginner.
Also, I know I'm being a bit greedy here and I should wait before asking but does that mean we can hope Kanji -> JP def vector in the future?

Kanji -> JP def vector in the future?

Interesting idea! I think JP→Kanji would probably work better though. Otherwise it’s going to be a wall of text.

I mean, both can be interesting!
I don't mind if there are some wall of text since I usually spend too much time already across multiple dictionaries anyway (for word or kanji).
It would take more time sure but you would also have the incorrect definition next to the correct definition directly after. Like for , you could have:
- おさまる。ちぢむ。ちぢまる。まとまる。 おさめる。にまとめる。つにまとめる。 おさめる。れる。れる。れる。 おさめる。(などが)げる。(definition of )
- いれる。れる。れる。れる。れる。 おさめる。おさまる。しまう。しまいこむ。 げる。す。う。 おさめる。わりにする。おさめ。わり。(definition of )

It would be bloated but it would also make you realize how much and are similar. And force to think about the detail for the next time. And that exactly what I'm doing right now with a few kanji but manually.

JP→Kanji would be quicker on the other hand and more useful to check if you already know those differences.
So, yeah, I'm greedy but if I can, I would take both of them kao_shiawase.png

JP Def would definitely be possible in the future.

Update: Changes to kanken levels 3,4,5 are complete, updating user data to remove no-longer-present readings. Levels 6 through 10 are the most common, but we're getting much lower in terms of the number of kanji still to be processed. Probably 6,7 tomorrow, 8-10 on Friday! Will be glad to have this done.

(PS: I really need to do a top-down redo of the kanji dictionary layout...)
