Sentences as in example sentences for a word / sentences found in the dictionary under "Sentences" tab
Sometimes there's the absolute weirdest sample sentences so it had me wondering where these even come from in the first place
Thanks lol
There are various sources. I don’t know them all (maybe Michael will tell us what they all were, if he even keeps track), but one of the largest is the Tatoeba Project, of which a large percentage of the sentences come from the Tanaka Corpus.
Original was Tanaka Corpus. Maybe 30,000 of them have been made specifically for renshuu.
On top of that, 10,000+ of the original Tanaka sentences have been revised, and I also have a native speaker/teacher going through those remaining original ones and marking them as fully "ok" or needing improvements.
Ah ok! thank you both for the info. If im not mistaken the ones from the Corpus should be writings from native Japanese sources which is excellent, and i would assume the 30,000 made-for-renshuu ones are also of japanese native source too, so thats actually really cool to know and raises the credibility and accuracy quite a bit. Once again yet another A+ aspect of renshuu! Thanks again guys and keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for the clarification. I love example sentences on Renshuu so much. I’ve been learning a lot from them. It’s good to know that they were all verified.
Well, the Tanaka corpus did have a good number of ..questionable sentences in them, otherwise we would have not had all the corrections/adjustments that we've had over the years. The renshuu-level verification is ongoing, and so the sentence library continues to improve each month!
The thing about the Tanaka corpus is that it was compiled by students, all of them native speakers of Japanese, but none of them professional translators. The Japanese is generally good Japanese, but it doesn’t always correspond to the English. Other times the English has errors.
But that’s the raw corpus, not what you see on renshuu.
This is slightly off the original topic, but the thing I always wonder is where do the example sentences on Jisho.org come from? They are often so random and odd.
