Who will be crowned tournament champion ?

Will it be another Yokozuna showdown ?

Who will rise and who will fall ?

Will the cushions remain in place on the ground, or will they fly ?

Will Ura pull off an 伝え反り ?

Will the ousted Sekiwakes 関脇 Kirishima and Wakatakakage strike back ?

Getting ready to settle down and watch the live broadcast on NHK. Got no 焼き鳥, but that will have to do. After the acrobatics and antics in London, I'm looking forward to a return to "normal" sumo. (And to hearing 残ったった! It was seriously weird watching the fights without that in the background. Not that it was the weirdest thing in London, but still.)

This is the very definition of ワクワク!

Nice tournament so far.

We've had:

-a henka 変化 taking out a Yokozuna

-a fisherman throw 網打, and an 送り投げ being pulled off in the top division.

- Chiyoshoma looking healthy, and holding his own again, back in the top division.( A big turnaround from his 1-14 record in July). Always good to see these warriors recover from their injuries.

There's still plenty of time for the field to catch up to the leaders, but can they find answers to Onosato and Aonishiki ?

Haha, been meaning to post after 中日, genuinely glad to see someone got here first! Hoping sumo threads will one day be abuzz with action.

  • Feels like we've had a lot of 変化 this tournament. I understand why they're frowned upon, but at the same time... wow.
  • Hoshoryu can be simply scary. Have I said that before? Probably.
  • Really liking Fujinokawa this tournament. In the "fast and inventive camp", Asakoryu is also doing well, which can't be said of Midorifuji. Still rooting for him though.
  • Starting to pay more attention to Ichiyamamoto. Not sure if he's doing anything different or I'm just learning more about sumo so I understand a little better, but he's somehow interesting. His ranking is less than stellar right now, but who knows?
  • I keep forgetting about Kusano's new しこ名 and going "huh?' when I see Yoshinofuji on the screen. Digging more into 力士 who fight under their given name, apparently there's also Takayasu and Endo. And Ura. Hmm, if Ura took a しこ, what would it be? His stable apparently doesn't have a lot of continuity in terms of names. I'd go with Momokijou, with and for the 起き上がりこぼし and because I can't imagine ピンク in a しこ.
  • Aonishiki just keeps growing and growing in skill. So interesting!
  • Loved the Onosato vs. Tamawashi on . Onosato never seems to give his opponents a mistake to take advantage of, he's so neat and tidy. But Tamawashi was just so good in that one! He doesn't seem to be doing great lately, I hope he's alright.
  • Tobizaru's knee looks worse every day, I hope it's just my impression. ちなみに, the London show gave us a unique oppprtunity: we actually got to see Ura's knees! Both of them! When did that last happen? I almost made a joke about Victorian times and ladies' ankles, but thinking of what he's recovered from and how hard he's fought to claw his way back up... makes it less funny and more admirable.

Uh, how did this get so long? I'll shut up now, sorry. Sumo is just so exciting! kao_punch.png

Don't want to say anything specific since it may be that not everyone here has watched the last day, but... wow. Can't wait to hear impressions from you. What a tournament! Looking forward to January (with some concern too).

Spoiler free impressions: A nail biter until the very end. Some very impressive performances. Looks like some major shake ups are going to happen in the top division in the near future. Those that learn to make the necessary adjustments will thrive, those that don't will have a rough time.
