Hey! I love Renshuu and had it as a goal to get up to N3 grammar before starting a more immersion/acquisition learning style, but quickly got into the weeds without the structure that Renshuu provides, and ended up burning out on study. However, I've gotten the urge again and want to return!

The only issue is that my lack of discipline has sort of landed me in an odd limbo where I'm not sure what I do and don't know well any more. I can read simple graded readers and largely don't have much problem with the reviews I've done, but I'm worried some grammar points will have faded out of my memory with disuse. I don't really want to reset all the schedules from Japanese Basics up though, so I was wondering if there were any other folks out there who have experienced a similar issue and how they handled it. Did you just go back through reviews and try and learn through repeated exposure? Or did you end up resetting a schedule?

Related question: Is there a way to not only review a grammar point, but also the explanation that comes built into the schedule when you learn a new one? Looking at the grammar points in the is nice but the tone of the explanations really makes them make sense.

になりました!

The whole idea of SRS (spaced repetition systems) is to handle stuff like this automatically. Different algorithms may do better or worse in practice, but in theory you should be able to pick up where you left off and let the computer work it out. So I would advise against resetting anything.

I’m sorry, but I don’t know the answer to your related question, unless the explanations you are looking for are in “Japanese Lessons” under Resources.

Finally, I hope you won’t think of your excursion into immersion as a wasted effort. It may not have worked out exactly as you expected, but you undoubtedly were training your ears the whole time. That should pay dividends going forward.

Anything in your schedule is basically a hyperlink to the dictionary, which also includes information and links to lessons which include them. You can look at that any time without having to do tests for a refresher. You don't have to reset anything. In fact, sometimes I'm just lazy myself and don't bother fiddling with settings.

If anything, I also try to research the topic elsewhere as well when I've started studying it, so at least there would be some piece of information I can recall, even if my memory is fuzzy. It's important for me to make notes as well.

Either way, Renshuu is equipped with its own dictionary for this stuff, and at least because of the way the schedule lists are designed, you can directly click each particular item. It doesn't hurt to at least try to do a review anyway.

I often leave the ones that are ready for review since I'm not really putting too much effort into it, and I don't have to. For the ones that don't have a scheduled review, I can always review them on my own anyway and try to work on those things best I can. Sometimes I have to cheat a little, but as long as I'm trying to learn to the point I don't have to do that eventually, then I have no issue. I'm not personally concerned with scoring as much as retention and proficiency.

With my experience with something like that I resetted it (still didn't finish it tho tbh).

Dude I do not know how I missed this, this is exactly what I was talking about. Thank you so much for pointing this out, as well as the encouragement! I will go ahead with what I've already done and try my best to just stick to the SMS model with your advice in mind. Thank you!
