Before I knew about Renshuu I used Duolingo.
Same, in fact, I started Duolingo maybe 1-2 years ago, but I didn't go there much so I'm still in the first unit . Also, because your message is longer, it helps me understand more clearly! Thank you !

lol yeah I typed up a storm didn't....
It is a very long message, and I read all of it lolz.
whereas Duolingo makes you talk about rice and water for the first 10 lessons lol.
For real, like when I first went to the Japanese course, it started teaching me RICE, GREEN TEA, WATER, etcetera about food like I JUST WANNA LEARN THE BASICS!!!!
IKR!! Like why teach us about food at of all the things we could learn!! Like could we not learn how to introduce ourselves first!!! Or, here's a nice idea... LETS LEARN THE ALPHABET....
I think the reason for that is that many people who aren't good at learning languages feel really accomplished when they learn vocabulary they think is cool, and apps like Duolingo usually vastly prioritize keeping beginner learners engaged for as long as possible and not actually progressing more advanced learners
i used to use duolingo too [proud quitter of 2 years]
my 'favourite' feature were the nuanced sentences right off of the bat [teaching a person whose only just learnt green tea and rice that 'chotto' exclusively means 'don't really like' - come on] with no explanation
OR, now get this, learning half of the numbers up to ten [not in order, best i can do is one, three, and eight or smth], and not seeing kanji until the whole sentence looks unreadable there's so much hiragana!!
I’ve used Duolingo before Renshuu and, in my opinion, Duo’s only advantage is the sentence building practice. However, vocabulary, kanji and grammar are all better in Renshuu, and you also have community members coming up with mnemonics and explanations, not to mention other tools and games at your disposal. I currently don’t use Duolingo due to their company values, and I replaced it with Lingo Legend - essentially another sentence building app with even stronger gamification. For speaking practice, I just repeat what I hear both here and on LL, since they don’t have this feature.
Unfortunately, in the last few years, Duolingo’s owners began to see the app as a moneymaking machine and not a learning tool. Because of that, many of its best features, like community explanations, classes and unlimited learning, disappeared or were locked behind a paywall :(

Now that someone (Joestars) has mentioned it (at least quoted it), duolingo used to teach reading on the path first but now it only teaches random things like rice, water and green tea as the first course rather than building the hiragana and katakana foundation first.
I also used to be on the classroom as a student and there was unlimited learning without paying (how am I now supposed to pay as a literal student) but now it's just a tool for teachers to supervise and set random tasks and the benefits for people (and students) in general require money.
Also one of the reasons I came here to renshuu in the first place and why I think renshuu is better
Edit: sorry if my writing style a bit awkward and confusing
