I’ve been going through some of the vocab on Renshuu and am randomly being given katakana for on’yomi readings on some words, and it’s throwing me off.
For example, I have always seen 十 written in kun’yomi as とお and the on’yomi as じゅう across every Japanese study source I’ve used. But just today, Renshuu started quizzing me on the on’yomi as being written in katakana as ジュウ.
Did something go wrong in my settings for readings? Is this a Renshuu specific preference? I feel fairly certain that even Renshuu was testing me previously using the hiragana writing for the on’yomi, but maybe my brain is just mixing up too many resources.
I don't know but the onyomi of the kanji are most commonly written in katakana, even if you look up it in dictionary. Because what would happen if you were to set the kunyomi and onyomi in both hiragana (somehow), you would be unable to differentiate between the kanji's onyomi and kunyomi. As I think, one aspect that separates on' and kun' is that, it is written in katakana and hiragana respectively.
Is this in vocab or kanji quizzes? If you're doing a vocab quiz and you get asked for 十, that should be じゅう or とお. If you're doing a kanji quiz and get asked for the on'yomi of 十, that should be ジュウ.

Yeah, the on’yomi being borrowed from Chinese makes sense that it would be written in katakana, I just haven’t seen it before, so it threw me off that I was suddenly being tested in katakana instead of hiragana.

It is during the kanji quiz! I guess the other sources I use- Wanikani, Bunpro, etc. are using the “vocab” style because the on’yomi is always written in hiragana.
