Hello! I'm using Renshuu on my Android phone, as an app. One thing I've run into a couple times is that I can't select text and copy it (e.g. from a sentence in the card you get after a quiz question). Or rather, I can select, but there's no hover menu to "copy"the text.
E.g. I've specifically wanted to be able to copy so I could paste into something like Google Translate, so I could live-edit the sentence and experiment with how the meaning changes, or so that I could get Google Translate to speak the sentence if Renshuu doesn't have audio for it.
I'm also not sure what happens with the furigana, if present. For my purposes I'm fine leaving them out of the copy operation.
Do you mind showing me what is looks like when you highlight text on renshuu? I'm on Android as well, and the system-level copy/share/etc. options pop up.
It's not totally consistent, apparently. On the word, it worked fine. For the sentence, it started okay, but as soon as I expand the selection the copy button (and its friends) got lost. Sometimes a small expansion keeps it, and sometimes the initial selection never has it... For whole sentences, like the one in the screenshot, highlighting the whole sentence is never working for me.
Thanks, and sorry for the delay. The native popup (the one you are trying to get) is not really controlled by my end of things, in the sense that there is nothing in the code that would turn it on for some places and off for others. I know that some sites (music lyric sites come to mind) will do everything they can to disable all of that, but renshuu doesn't have anything in it.
My *guess* is that because the sentence is rich text, the backend of it (the html) is not a single block of text - there are elements within elements used to style the furigana, underlining, and various other things. What that does is probably throws off Android into thinking this is a block of text that can be copied.
Unfortunately, assuming that is the cause of the issue, reducing the complexity of the html would not be possible without compromising the functionality of a lot of other things that the sentence displays rely on.
The furigana would mess up the clipboard copy anyway. I’ve had this happen many times on the iPhone, which otherwise usually has no trouble with it.
Probably the only way to make this work reliably would be to add a “copy to clipboard” button on every word and sentence. Not sure if it would see much use though.
The workaround that I use to copy a word is to use the add an example sentence dialogue. This contains the word in simple text, so it is easy to copy it and paste it into a search engine somewhere.
If the furigana messes up the clipboard, that's on Apple, unfortunately. There is already code in place that works on the web/android that will, when furigana is present, skip that when copying/pasting.
