I have a question about how the sentence and grammar quizzes were designed: is the translation only supposed to be used as a hint, or were they designed so that we are aupposed to check the translation first?

I've been using the translation as a hint only. I feel that if I always look at the translation first, it becomes a robotic process of memorization rather than me truly understanding from the context.

However, when I read the comments where I feel 2 choices are correct, someone often points out that choice B does not match the translation. I mean, sure, but that doesn't explain why choice A would be better than B if the quiz was designed to be answered without the translation. So, now I am second guessing my method.

Is the translation a hint, or a necessity by design?

i think using translation as hint only will be more beneficial on learning, i see some tricky question where both answer can be correct but one of them just not sound natural enough that can be solved without translation.

Well for the quiz that "doesnt match the translation" case, it's rare enough that you can choose to ignore the sentence so it doesnt appear in quiz or just memorize it.

Think of it this way. You are memorizing model sentences that you can adapt as needed when you speak and write Japanese. The grammar lessons are the explanation of how these sentences work, but what you want to learn is the sentences themselves. In order to do that, you need to understand what they mean.

Hint. The reason for this is that with the jumble questions, there are often multiple ways to arrange the words that work grammatically (and semantically), but would not match the translation.
