Would it be possible to offer different scheduling options? I’ve added a lot of lists to my dashboard, but I don’t do them all in a day. I think it would be great if there was an option to set your schedule to a weekly reset instead of a daily reset. This way I can still cycle through all of my lists over the course of a week before everything resets. The way it is now, I can’t always keep track of which ones I haven’t studied. And it’s also a little discouraging to never complete my dashboard. I know that I can remove and combine schedules, but that’s not what I want to do. I like having all of the schedules, I would just like a longer period of time to go through them all. It might also be good to offer a monthly schedule too for those people who don’t have a lot of time to study, but would still like to progress through their lists without starting from scratch each day.

I really like this idea!

Although I doubt I'll be able to implement something like this without a ton of work, I'd like to explore this idea a bit to make sure I understand it.

It *sounds* like this is what is happening:

1. You have too many terms to review on a daily basis

2. You think that if you have a week to "finish" them, you'd get more completed.

If this is correct, then I am not quite sure if what you're asking for is what you really want. Based on my (possibly flawed) understanding, let's take a simple example. You have a schedule with 7 terms in it. It just happens to be that this week, each day has one of the terms scheduled.

Instead of this, you would prefer to not have "sunday: 1 term, monday: 1, etc.", but rather, "this week: 7 terms". Putting into the pre-existing system, you actually want "sunday: 7 terms", and then 0 terms for mon-sat.

If this is the case, what happens if you finish a term that is still new and low level, and renshuu would typically reschedule it for 2-3 days in the future. If you studied it in Monday, would it not schedule it for that week again, and throw it onto the pile for next week?

Assuming that's true, you could effectively achieve the same thing by just tweaking the mastery level spacings.

Set level 2 to "7 days", then you'd never see the same term appear more than once in the same week. You'd presumably want to space out the other reviews as well so they do not appear as frequently.

Since it sounds like your main concern is being able to finish, it is not so much that you want them to be "available" for a week, but that you want to have them at a number where you can finish them in a week (or month)'s time, regardless of whether they are visually labeled as "study this week", or split up into individual days.

I do not want to go on any further in case I am *way* off base here, but here's what I thought upon seeing this.

I think you’re misunderstanding what I’m asking for. I’m not talking about spreading the individual terms over a week. I’m asking about spreading the scheduled lists on the dashboard across a week. So say for example I have 10 vocabulary lists and 10 kanji lists currently scheduled on my dashboard. Each one contains 50 terms. On Monday I’m able to complete four of the lists (200 terms). That leaves me with 16 lists left. Currently, in the middle of the night, the dashboard resets, and I will have 20 lists to study again the next day. So I’m wondering if we can set the schedule to not reset the dashboard until the week is up. That way on Monday I can finish four lists (200 terms), Tuesday I can finish three more lists (150 terms), Wednesday I can finish five more lists (250 terms), Thursday I can finish 6 more lists (300 terms), etc. So now I have the entire week to get 20 lists on the dashboard completed (1000 terms). Then when Monday rolls around, the whole dashboard resets. I don’t think this would affect the current goals/rewards schedule, because the daily, weekly, and ongoing rewards could still function the same way. Does that make sense?

Maybe this will help explain better. I’m wondering if we can change this setting to a weekly refresh instead of a daily refresh. So people could still set their refresh time of day. But maybe there could be another drop-down menu that allows you to choose daily refresh, weekly refresh, or monthly refresh. Then the dashboard wouldn’t refresh until the week is up or the month is up and it would still refresh at the same time of day.

Thanks. I do think I am not mistaken, we just have crossed wires in the discussion. Oh, just for clarity (and so others reading this will understand), everything on the dashboard is called a schedule (which may have lists inside of it). :)

Ultimately, you are still changing when things need to be scheduled. So, to go back to my previous example, let's take 1 single schedule, not 10. Fit into this new system, if you studied this one schedule on Monday, you would not see it again until next week, right? (because if you had 10 schedules, or whatever, you'd want to be able to study them on the other days, without having schedule #1 come "back" to get in the way).

That breaks the internal mechanics, because schedule #1 still has terms that might want to be studied earlier than next week. Maybe you just learned a term for the first time in schedule #1 on Monday. If schedule #1 is now "done" for the week (it would not get reset until Sunday or Monday). But that new term is so fresh, it wants to be studied again! Having a new term only appear for one question each week (assuming it is in only one schedule), then not appear until the next week would almost certainly keep you from ever really getting it fixed in your head.

I understand what you’re saying, but doesn’t this also happen when you have a schedule set for review or an easy pace? I mean, there are words that might want to show up on the schedule because of the internal mechanics, but they are restricted by the schedule’s pace. There might be 50 words that want to show up on the schedule, but the schedule is restricted to 10 words either because of the pace or because of manual settings limiting the number of terms on a quiz. I don’t see how it’s any different.

It's hard to explain the internal mechanics of the system in how they are actually implemented (the data structures, etc.), but I hope it suffices to say that even assuming I want to move forward with the idea, it would require a HUGE HUGE amount of work and "trickery" in the code (which always causes problems later on) to get it to work in the way you are describing. Instead, I'm trying to approach it from the angle of "I'm not sure this would actually be beneficial", and "it is not going to appear exactly the same, but here are some things (the mastery spacings) you can do now to get closer to what you're looking for.
