On any of your schedules, Settings > More settings > tick "Don't learn new terms until daily review is finished", and then just do reviews until you feel ready to learn some more terms.

You can also change your "Pace" (from the 3 dots to the right of any schedule) to "Review / no new words, focus on review".

You're not forced to learn 10-20 new terms a day :)

What exactly do you "hate"? And, asking just in case, is that what you feel, or is it something else, like frustration or impatience? Do you hate Japanese? If so, quitting is the right choice, of course. But what made you start in the first place? How do you feel about Japanese? Share your experience some more and maybe we'll find you've just been going about it the wrong way, or your goals need adjusting.

I made a similar mistake before. I didn't turn off don't review new terms until daily reviews finished and was bombarded with 300 terms to review each day. I get that feeling but if you really do have a strong reason to learn it such as what got you into it, could help process your reason you started and if you enjoyed it before everything happened.

Your schedule on the otherhand, if you cannot review everything, my hack was to freeze only that schedule and unfreezing to stop terms piling up until it returns back to a manageable range without freezing and letting it reset normally once I finished the intense reviews and repeat until the review number is manageable again before introducing new reviews.

However, my trick might not be for everyone but just something that kept my Japanese journey alive that I wanted to share. Hope it works out somehowkao_guts.png

If you struggle with the daily waterfall of new words, why don't you pause them until you're ready for more?

(you can adjust your daily limit to increase or decrease the number of new words per day)

You're not made to do anything here. Making a streak is just for motivation. You just get bonuses for keeping it up, but there's no adverse effect on inconsistency. I would know, as I'm lazy. kao_nene.png

You can just reduce the quiz size so you get fewer questions each time you practice. Or you can just focus on other stuff. Like practicing kanji or grammar. You don't have to focus on one thing alone.

You don't need to learn new words everyday.
You can learn a few words on monday for example and spend the rest of the week doing review or different things. Like writing which help with memorizing if you like. Studying sentence can also help and can be more fun too, especially if you choose simple sentences.

There are a lot of different way to study vocabulary. And learning words only with renshuu is generaly not the best way to increase your vocabulary (except for stubborn people but even with that, a lot of people could a lot from doing other things). It's better to do less with renshuu because that where it will shine. When it support your study, not the opposite.

Like when your forgot a word, then take a look at the meaning in the dictionary, a few sentences or even block if you don't have the time. Do less with renshuu and give yourself some time to "solve" problematic word. Don't just push through because you will be the first to break. And if you don't have the time to take care of those, then just don't. Block them. Renshuu will remember every single one of them and when you will have more time, you will be able to care of those. You don't have to remember everything right now. Except if you imposed on yourself some deadlines/specific objectives like the JLPT test, which I don't recommend unless you need too for some reasons. Just have fun learning easy or interesting words. Or words that I want/need to learn. Focus on those first. It will be never too late to study the others later. If you need to (which may be the case for a few years). I did that a lot and it was never a real problem. Despite speaking to native regularly or watching youtube everyday. A few months, I unblocked a few terms that were in the N5 or N4 lists. Some I completely forgot about and some others, I remembered/learned from immersion. But I did not really study them on renshuu until a few month ago. And I didn't needed them for 4 years. Still don't need them (they were just easier to remember since I was studying their kanji at the same time).

So, yeah, don't worry, every one go throught that and it's normal. But every members also find a way to handle that. By changing their method, taking to study something else or changing the pace, etc. But not by pushing throught most of the time (except for stubborn but it's not really a good way... I mean, it can but stubborn people have their own methods too to solve the problem that come along).

Hi there, I would like to activate this ‘no new words until after review’ as well but I can’t find it. Under settings I can’t find a ‘more settings’. Where exactly is this option in app or on the website? ありがとう 😊

It's in the setting of the schedule "New term per quiz"

Oh and you need to click on your schedule's name, then click on the cog

Then "more settings" at the bottom of the pop-up

Don't hesitate to ask if you any other questions (and if any other beginners/new users see that, same è_é)
Renshuu is a really good app but also an obnoxiously overwhelming app. And even when you know how to use it, you don't have the time to use it fully.
Lot that may be useful for a lot of people (and even prevent them from burning out).
It took 6 month roughly to get used to most features (by experimenting and trying to see which setup I really liked or not). And during the same time, new features were also added kao_dead.png.

Of course, there's no need to try to experiment with every thing like I do but some small experiment can be very useful and some settings can change everything too (The daily/weekly limit for new words or review is a setting that every beginners/new users should try imo for example since burning out is of the main reason why most people struggle with Japanese)

Others have already talked about settings for the quizzes to make them more manageable, but I want to touch upon "i never get all right". It is perfectly fine, maybe even a good thing, to not get 100% on quizzes.

I found it really helpful when I read a suggestion that it's actually good to be scoring around an 80% on reviews. The reasoning makes sense: if you're getting everything correct, then you're stagnating and not growing; you already know everything so you should be learning more new terms. However, If you can reach 60-80% correct, then you're showing growth because you know most of them, but still have words you're actively learning. Hearing about this made me feel a lot better about not getting everything right.

Another note, too, is that marking answers wrong is also good for you. Clicking "I don't know" or "mark is incorrect" after answering means Renshuu knows you need to review that word more.

It may feel disappointing to get an answer wrong, but ultimately being incorrect is good because it is how you learn more. Do as others have suggested and reduce the quantity of new terms, use smaller quizzes, but also understand that getting perfect scores should not be your goal.

The app is very customizable, so you can lower the sizes of daily reviews; you can lower the amount of words you learn on a daily basis or for each quiz; you can only get new words once you finish the daily review, if you want to.

So whenever something is too hard or too easy, it can be adjusted in general or schedule-specific settings.

Also, it’s just the learning process, the more you repeat, make mistakes and fix them, the more you get accustomed to the language. By the way, when I get a term wrong, I see it as a good thing, since I can spend more time on this word, which will help me memorize it better in the long term compared to words I remember well at first and forget after some time. So yeah, don’t be so hard on yourself, it’s a journey, so take it easy and slow.

On any of your schedules, Settings > More settings > tick "Don't learn new terms until daily review is finished", and then just do reviews until you feel ready to learn some more terms.

Is there a way to globally change this setting for all of my schedules at once and make it the default for new schedules?

@StefanKo Not as far as I know. I usually customise my schedules directly after I add/make them. It would be a nice QOL feature to have though.

(assuming it isn't already available and I just don't know about it)
