Hey, I just started using Renshuu and I like it, but I wanted to ask: is it possible to study kanji vocab/words rather than kanji readings?

What I mean is, I want to study kanji that have their own meaning as standalone words, or that combine with other kanji or hiragana to form words I should know at my level. I don't want to be quizzed on kunyomi or onyomi readings.

I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but I think it's a better way to learn — at least for me. This is how I've studied in the past.

It's not. A lot of people learn like that and Japanese mainly learn like that. Well, more exactly, they learn a lot of spoken words and then just associate existing words the kanji they're learning. Either at school or reading a book with furigana.

As for renshuu, not really, unless you have pro.

漢字の十文字 and Complete the vocab are 2 advanced questions that are exactly what you want. At the same time, you can't completely get rid of the reading questions (renshuu doesn't let disable them). The option is to completely disable the reading questions like q.Lime.q.

So, there are no straighforward ways to that.
On the other hand, you can always pick a few words per kanji and add to a schedule. Either manually or with a word helper schedule. You just need to click on the three dots on the right of kanji schedule

And by the way, the equivalent exist too for word schedule (it's called kanji helper schedule).
The downside is that the words may a bit random but it doesn't cost a lot of time and effort.

Another option is doing it manually. It require more effort but it can also be easier to learn. Just because you pick the words you want to learn or because they are easier to learn for some reason.

Last option is using a list. I made a list for that specific objective but it's a list to study with the kanji kentei lists. It was before the helper schedule and I'm working on it because of 1 advantage. I made the list so that I almost never learn a words with a kanji I don't know or didn't already studied. Main disadvantage is the words are not always common. They are just easier to learn. 雨水 for example: 雨 (rain) + 水(water) -> rain water. It worked really for the onyomi. For the kunyomi, it was a bit different and not my main focus (since kunyomi are a bit easier to learn except verbs).

Learning them in sentences can a good way too.

So, no, it's not an unpopular opinion :D
