So I'm making this forum in hopes people with more experience with japanese and people with problems like me can come out and try to help each other. I've been working on japanese for a couple days now and only have like about the basic 5 letters completely memorized. I have 70 letters that are supposed to be known at this time the problem is even if I review them I keep forgetting (I'm not old but my family does have a history of memory problems) I know yall can't help me with my family's history but im sure others are having the same problems. If yall have any tips on how to stay focused and remember japanese please reply. Thanks and love yall.kao_heart.png

Btw if you do make your reply in japanese please have an English translation (I'm still very new).

Well I know that nobody has responded but if anyone passes by ive started only doing hiragana instead of trying to tackle hiragana and katakana at the same time. Today when I was doing my review I only got 4 wrong instead of my usual like 15 (And this was without guessing) So I feel if you just focus on one thing till its locked down you should be able to remember it better. I'd still like better ideas though love yall kao_great.png.

I recomend using mnemonics for each letter. Japanesepod101 has a great video for this. For example ね (ne) looks like a snail, emphasis on "nai" part of snail because it sounds like "ne". And also, get a whiteboard and write it out by hand, that helps a lot. Eventually it will be as recognizable as the english alphabet with enough practice.

Hey congrats on ur progress! And try to remember the letters in the beginning with mnemonics so you’ll always have that picture when you look at some of the letters : ) also try to write down the letters a couple times in a notebook while saying the sound out loud, it really helps! I used to write down a couple of rows of a letter like that and it also helps with writing too hehhee. Good luck on your journey and may we both make good progress we’ll be proud of! kao_heart.png

Sorry if writing this bothers you or if you even see this but I have found that writing them down helps. I will definitely look into those videos and I do try to come up with me yown creative ideas to get me to remember each symbol but let's just say I have no creativity at all. Thanks so much though . kao_sparkle.png

Try mnemonics! For example "ra" (ら) looks like a RAbbit! IT really helps! I finished hiragana and katakana obły thanks to that!

By the way have yall heard the japanese alphabet it sounds like a anime opening. But if you listen to it it really helped me memorize the sounds. If you want to check it out I recommend Japaneseconer015 alphabet song. Hope this helps someone.

Since you have just started to learn Japanese: Maybe try a different tool. I made my first steps using "Wagotabi" at Steam, which starts with teaching you words, and as soon as you have 5 or so you learn how to do simple sentences. And the Hiragana you learn are just the ones you need for these words. (Same with Katakana and Kanji). There is even a free demo on Steam. Yes, I switched to renshuu and like it, and yes, I recommend renshuu... usually, but everyone is a bit different and maybe a different approach like Wagotabi may be more suited to you. Though you will come back to renshuu when you reached the limit of what Wagotabi has to offer.

If you like Anime, Manga, Pop-Music, Social Media or whatever Japanese you can find that offers text you are genuinely interested in. Try this:

- Get a version of the text that has hiragana (or even romaji* if you cannot find anything better) 🔍

- Find words that contain hiragana you know. Or lack only one kana you don’t know. Find something you can (almost) read. 🤔

- Learn that word as an example for the hiragana you (almost) know. 🤓

- Be happy knowing something about the favourite Japanese thing you like 🤩

The thing is, if your brain is super happy and curious(!), it‘s in a state where it‘s prepared to learn and memorize.

* Look up the romaji word here on renshuu in the dictionary and learn the hiragana, not the romaji version of it! That’s the whole point, right?

I have a notebook I keep writing the letters in and try to identify the letters in any Japanese media I watch, just being able to point them out makes the letters stick better
