Hello! I've gotten very confidant with my kana and have been practicing the "Words for Japanese Basics" and "Japanese Basics". I was looking for some outsider opinion on when to add the kanji helper schedule or even if i should. Does that kind of schedule exist later? I do not want to throw off Renshuu's schedule flow, but I do want to continue to improve.
Okay so each level has its own kanji schedule starting at N5, the beginner level. Basics doesn't have one. So you're not expected to learn kanji until after completing basics.
But I think that's dumb. Whenever you learn a new kanji, old vocab containing that kanji will come up for review again. I find this inflates my reviews a little more than I'd like. I think if I had just learned the kanji the first time I learned the word, I'd have fewer reviews, but I have no real data to back that up with.
So, if you feel like you're ready, you can start now. You can either use the beginner N5 kanji schedule, or use a kanji helper schedule.
If you use a helper schedule, you can change its settings to only teach kanji up to a certain level. I've personally set mine to teach any kanji that shows up in my words regardless of level.
tl;dr: Renshuu is set up to wait until the beginner schedules to teach kanji, but I feel like it's better to just rip the bandaid off and start right away. Ultimately, it's up to you.
