Unfortunatly, not that I am aware of =x That's also why I always use the set feature and try to divide my list into step instead. It allow me to have better control on how I study to. Instead of studying 100 or 200 items in one go, I can choose what I want I to study whenever I want, I can stop whenever I want, etc.

That allow me stop, take my time when I struggle and add a few sentences in another schedule (to learn the words in context for example which help a lot). It's also easier to remember the words when studying them by theme. A bit like studying a subject at school (math, history, geography, etc).
Otherwise, the only solution that I can think of with big list is to use the advanced tools (forgot the name in english, I switched renshuu to japanese). You add everything in a schedule and remove what you don't want. But it's limited to the filters avaible in that feature.
I haven’t tested it, but I think it’s possible to study the results of a search within a list. That’s fairly limiting, but you could use it to study only words matching あ*, for example. You can also just quit partway through the list if you’ve reached your limit. You won’t get the benefit of reviewing your mistakes, but all your answers will be saved and your mastery levels updated.
As Shumugan says, advanced search from the tools menu is the only way to get exactly what you want, but it involves a lot more work on your part.
what i would do is either limit the amount of words you would study in a session to like 10 for example, or just create different lists for the groups of words you want to study.
for example say your studying 過去いい、ばか and ありがとう you would split the words into 3 separate study groups and use them individually when you want to study them

And it is my understanding that if I make a schedule from a list, and then I add to the list later, then the new terms don't transfer to the schedule without creating a new schedule?
I believe that to be true. Auto syncing between lists and schedules would be a nice enhancement, but I assume there are complications that prevent @マイコー from implementing it.
