I've been studying Japanese since spring 2018. I've also studied French, but I found it far less engaging than Japanese. At first, I was drawn to Japanese for no reason in particular, but after learning hiragana, the structure of the language hooked me, and I've been studying it ever since. It also helped that, after starting to study Japanese, various sorts of Japanese media started to pique my interest. Specifically, anime, manga, light novels, and certain kinds of Japanese music. I've finished Genki 1 and am moving on to Genki 2 with the rest of my Japanese class. I practice writing in Japanese a lot, even though I'm not particularly good at it. I aim to be able to read and write in Japanese someday.

My non-Japanese hobbies include reading, writing, sketching, gaming, and studying. In general, I like fantasy novels, especially space (Foundation, Lensmen) or animal fantasy (Wings of Fire, anything by Lasky) novels. I also dabble in nonfiction (The Omnivore's Dilemma, The Future of Humanity). I'm a slow reader. I draw infrequently. I most frequently draw cats (I have two.), disembodied eyeballs (This sounds maybe sort of weird, but they're simple and fun.), and monsters.

I tend to frequent forums and the like during the summer months as that's when I have the most time. The summer before last was Flight Rising. Last summer was Food Fantasy and Wanikani. This summer is renshuu. I still use Wanikani, but I don't go on the forums as much. On other parts of the internet, I'm known as "Tealwing". Here, I'm "" as this is a Japanese forum. is read はなびがく. I used to rather like all of the Japanese words that meant "study of x/y/x", so I made a username for the study of fireworks.

In previewing my post, a lot of spaces disappear in the second paragraph. I'm not sure why, but I hope that's not true for the actual post.

Did the spaces appear as you expected?

They did, yeah. It was only in the preview that they were off.

If you go to that post now, edit, then preview, does the problem return?

Hello! I'm Albey. I didn't see this thread when I posted the other day. ^^;
I've briefly dabbled in studying Japanese twice in the past few years, but I'm making a more concentrated effort this time. I wish I knew about this site back then, though my first attempt was when this thread was only a year old, so I imagine it was quite different back then. :P
But I like what I've found here. ^-^

こんにちはみんな!
so i'm basically learning japanese from scratch. i enjoy a good challenge and i have nothing better to do with my time soooo hooray!
a bit about me: i have a small case of "special snowflake syndrome" meaning i absolutely hate being lumped into a majority group :]
like how a lot of people pick up japanese because "haha anime." meanwhile i'm just learning for learning's sake and plan to follow through to the end. i LOVE the idea of getting to the point where i know enough to learn more without having to use english as a middle-man.

anyway hi guys lol. doesn't look like there are very many of you. this is just the start of my language adventure, the most obvious choices were either renshuu or WaniKani. hope i made the right choice <3

Hello, my name is Felix! I'm pretty new to Renshuu, but I like it a lot so far and plan to come here often for my studies. The art is really cute and the games are fun, though I'll have to get a bit better at Japanese before I can play all of them.

I started learning Japanese seriously maybe a few months ago, though I've been trying to start learning for years. I'm hoping I'll finally stick to it this time. I'm currently an IT student majoring in software development, but I'm planning to switch to linguistics next year if everything goes well.

It's nice to meet you all. (=^_^=)

Hello everyone, I recently found this site again while going through my old emails. Looks like I created this account ages ago but my dumb ass forgot about it and never used it, I dunno why this happened.
I had a look through today and it looks amazing. My next uni break is coming so I want to catch up on my Japanese. I studied Japanese during high school but I got busy in uni and I haven't progressed much in the last few years.

It's nice to meet you all,
Thank you マイコー for the great site and サキ for the beautiful illustrations!

さんこんにちは。はシェリルです。よろしくおいします。

I started learning japanese in 2017 but found it difficult so I stopped because I had no one to support me. I came across renshuu when I was looking for a solid learning platform and I'm glad I found it. I started learning again from September 2020 and I hope I'll be able to progress fast. I still find it very frustrating when I can't understand or make sentences but there are still little victories😁. I also hope to make friends with similar interest(food, spongebob, cats, and fun chats in general) and grow.
