First off, I'm not requesting that the site have its own "write your kanji here" type feature (although that would be nice, I guess).

I use my IME's handwriting feature to write out kanji to see if I can reproduce them from memory. I want there to be a way so that I can use my vocab schedule to improve only on vocab definitions and recognizing kanji, and use my kanji schedule to input kanji via my IME's handwriting feature so that I can practice writing kanji (in addition, of course, to readings, meanings, and radical names). Is there already a way to do this? If so, how?

EDIT: Oh, and I would just like to say that I just discovered this site yesterday and am REALLY impressed. This is exactly what I've been looking for for a long, long time. I've always learned Japanese just by reading, listening, and talking to people, but I wanted to find a way to organize my self-study so I could actually keep track of what I know and make sure I would be prepared for a formal exam. Your site does everything for me, and for free at that! :O
So, thanks a lot, Michael!

I'll be honest: I read the post originally, then completely forgot to reply to it. I've been really crazy busy with both the site and my personal life, so I haven't been able to think about much else. I'll get to this post in the next couple days with a full answer, promise!

Ok, answer time:

1. Your kanji schedule: no, there's nothing like that (yet). Basically, you'd like to take the kanji quizzes that already exist, and just add an option for direct input instead of multiple choice, right? Were that the case, you could use the IME. Is that what you're getting at? IF that's the case, it wouldn't be terribly hard to add, although I can't promise a quick turnaround on feature requests for awhile.

2. Vocab schedule: improving vocab definitions is given, right? If you're using a mastery schedule set to 'complex', you can hand-pick the question types you want.

as to 'recognizing' kanji, can you give me an example of what you mean? I don't quite follow you.

I understand; I can't imagine how much work writing, moderating, and managing this site alone must be in addition to whatever other obligations you have (you're teaching English in Japan, aren't you?) My bump was just meant to be a friendly reminder ;)

Yes, that's precisely what I'm proposing.

Yep, I've already done that and the vocabulary schedules are perfect for my purposes the way they are.
as to 'recognizing' kanji, can you give me an example of what you mean? I don't quite follow you.
By 'recognize' I simply mean that I can read a lot more kanji than I can write (even without the aid of context). So, the idea was that I could learn a much broader array of kanji that I can't necessarily write by setting the vocabulary quizzes to display all kanji (regardless of whether it considers me to have encountered them before). At the same time, the kanji quizzes would allow me to carry out a more intensive study of a smaller number of kanji.

For example, I can consistently read without context but would be hard-pressed to replicate it from memory. It's a JLPT4 vocabulary word, but a JLPT2 kanji. By asking me to write out its reading in the level 4 vocabulary quizzes, I'm not yet required to memorize it exactly, just recognize it. Then when I get to level 2, a direct input field would allow me to utilize my IME to ensure that I can actually write it out myself.

Oh, and if you do have time to implement this, just have it display all of the readings and English definitions along with an input field (to deter ambiguity).

If I understand you correctly, the site already handles this. Try going into 'settings' under the 'Quizzing' tab. At the bottom, you can adjust your a)kanji study history and b)kanji display settings to more finely set what kanji you want to appear, even if it isn't naturally in a particular set/level of materials.

Yeah, that was my point. The idea is that vocab already does what I want (allows me to test recognition) but kanji doesn't allow me to test writing.

*laughs* so basically, it's just the one request for direct input of kanji answers?

On a similar note, can we add fill-in options for radical names, too?

Sorry, only kanji entry for now. Don't feel like adding in stuff for the radicals yet - too tedious :P. The kanji stuff should be up on the beta soon.

Hmmm...

I don't see the option for this at the main schedule page, but if I take the quiz, end it, and hit 'o' I see it. But then if I set it to active and retake the quiz, it doesn't allow input for kanji. Am I missing something?
*Note: not all questions with kana/kanji answers can be answered with fill-in-the-blank (example: hiragana -> kanji questions)
Why can't we answer hiragana->kanji questions with fill-in-the blank?
